David....you old cynic ! Its possible Britain is on its last legs, washed up,
got the clap. Same thing was said in the Thirties, same thing was said
before the Falklands, same thing was said when Docklands was an ugly
wasteland 15 years ago !
We most definitely are not in League One (I think even Cameron realises
that), but Britain is not quite on its hind legs as you would like to believe.
You are entitled to your view. I think its a trifle exaggerated, thats all.
Brazil, as just an example, has done wonders in very recent times. That
success story could unravel, Latino style, any minute, such is South
American volatility. And once again, its total clout (economically and
historically) on the world stage is but a minor player compared to the UK.
But getting back to our role in the World - your main point - it would be
better, I think you and I are agreed - if successive UK Governments did
not talk Churchillian rot about us being in League One !! Since Labour,
and now (I am disgusted to say) Lib/Tory Govts have done all they can
to ruin the fighting strength of our Armed Forces, lets accept that
Britain is about as powerful as France....or possibly California (if the
latter was a country !)
