It was also the only mainstream film I can recall to depict anal sex.
There's another thread going on this forum entitled "Crappy, Stupid, Yankee Films."
LTIP was a European made film (French / Italian), with an established American actor in the lead.
I could never see the Yanks making a film like this today and I can?t see an established American actor going anywhere near a film like this today.
Could you see Tom Cruise or John Travolta or any of those Scientology twats going anywhere near a film like this today?

Have a look at Cruise in Magnolia. His character has a line 'Respect the cock!'

Ive seen LTIP. The implication as I saw it was that latter day film stars such as Cruise wouldn't take risks in their selection of films. Wouldn't do anything that would challenge or upset the audience's notions of who they are and what they're about. Arguably Cruise did this with 'Born On The 4th July' and later with 'Magnolia'.
At the time that Brando did LTIP he wasn't hot. Famously - so it's said - he had to screen test/ read for The Godfather so arguably at this point in his career people weren't paying much attention to what Marlon Brando was or wasn't doing.

Meatus, I agree it's a superb movie. I saw it about ten years ago by accident, not expecting much, it must have been on telly. It blew me away. It's a movie with far greater value than what it's notorious for.
