Early 1980's, they were notorious clip joints hell bent on ripping off hard working people.
Went with my mate (both 19) and paid ?6.00 entry to get in, some ropey old skank (topless) insisted we had a drink, so we paid ?3.00 for a can of luke warm Bitter.....no lager or even cold cans! THE FILMS WERE TOP NOTCH, swedish loops and the toilets stank of stale cum. On the way out, we were told of some 'under the counter' magazines (sealed) with a set of 3 for ?20.............and the cover was filthy!
Snapped them up to have a look on the train home......you guessed it, inside were Fiesta/men Only type mags with a hardcore picture that 'sold' the package.
We felt ripped off at that point, but prior to that, felt we had VFM......considering the videos you 'could' acquire from dodgy Indian video rentals cost a fiver a go to start with.
You live and learn and put it down to experience.

Interesting to see that no one has actually answered the original poster's question... instead we have max_tranmere giving us further proof (if any were needed) of what an idiot he is and how he shouldn't be allowed out without holding his mummy's hand!

Cheers Bob, I always found you more polite in comments you posted in reply to things I said on threads in the past.

Bob never lets us down. I thought I would respond to one of his obnoxious comments this time. Usually I just ignore them.

Re: soho sex cinema's
I've always found it odd how the unlicenced places are allowed to continue when they are breaking the law. As we all know porn film selling is now legal but prior to about 10 years ago it was not so any shop selling porn videos in the 1980s and 90s should, you would think, have been raided by the Police and closed down. These places operated for years, many still do, and it was only occasionally that one got raided. If someone opened a shop in Soho selling hard rugs, and they mentioned on the frontage of the shop that was what they did, then they would be shut down within the hour. Most of these illegal Soho porn movie outlets have been there for years.
One place I can think of, with the same name and the same shop facade it has always had, is now on is third location in the area. I shopped, and was ripped off by the lowlife who ran it, there in the 1900s. It is now at another location about 50 yards away (I have walked passed the new location but would never go in there). I only realised recently when I saw a famous movie, starring a famous British actor that was filmed around there in the 1980s, that it used to be somewhere else too - again only about 50 yards from where it presently is and its other location back in the 90s. This outlet have been in Soho for over 25 years and will probably be there forever.

Re: soho sex cinema's
It isn't very easy to close places selling DVD's down. A council can only take what stock is on the shop floor so the store room can be full of stock ready to go straight out when the council (not police) close it down.
There are less and less unlicensed places as licensed shops put pressure on the council to close them down and part of their license fee is paid to monitor and close down unlicensed shops.
But if anyone fancies opening an unlicensed shop, Soho would seem like the best place in the country to do it - high prices and you don't have top worry about pissing off the locals.
