Absolutely spot on.

Pity you don't know what you are saying.
Haig was not the "Butcher" as portrayed in some histories. In fact he was a extremely good commander who knew what was what and who had to work under a French CinC.
The Earl Haig Fund does not spend most of its takings in Admin. The vast majority of the "Poppies" are made by disabled ex Service men and women.
The Earl Haig Fund is still the Earl Haig Fund as far as I and other ex servicemen and women are concerned and along with the RNLBI are the only two that I donate to. Most of the others donations are engulfed with admin costs.
Whenever there is a disaster somewhere in the world a certain misunderstood organisation in the UK donates cash directly within 24 hrs of the event whilst the Red Cross and their ilk are advertising in the media for the generous Brits to send their donations to them. The TV and other media adverts aint free.

Because in both cases these are symbolic insults, but the symbolism is
quite different.

The poppy represents the war dead, but the insult is not
aimed against the fallen per se, but what they were fighting for.
Or rather: what they are fighting for these days in Afghanistan/Iraq
today, because that is really the issue. That also means that the insult is primarily aimed at the governments that made them fight there.

The Koran is, however, a symbol for all Islam. Burning it is thus a symbolic attack aimed at all Muslims.

What both cases have in common is a generous application of the throw-it-all-in-one-pot strategy. With the Koran-burning, it's throwing in the Islamist nutters in one big pot with all other Muslims. With the Poppy-burning, it's more subtle, as this strategy (treating all war dead the same) is applied on both sides for different reasons: the government has an interest in protecting its contemporary war-dead memorials from being undermined by protesters as a platform attacking its foreign policy and thus tries to protect the events by associating the memorials with less controversial wars; the protesters essentially are calling the government's bluff, and strengthening their voice by saying: what's happening now is so bad that we are prepared to insult the dead of previous wars to draw attention to it.

beutelwolf. Interesting points there, I do think it is very offensive to burn poppy's and also people who chose to live in this country and take a lot from it should be grateful to our war dead, the symbols that represent them, the dead themselves, etc. Otherwise they should leave the country!

i agree also; i support " help our heroes";
and the point also is not whether the Koran warrants more coverage than the poppy protest - it is the fact that it was not reported at all. Even if they had just said a protest was being staged and that poppys would be burned -it would have taken 10 seconds.
it reminds me the day i was walking through the main square in birmingham a couple of years ago, and a small placard was being erected by 4 people outside the NIA centre when a conference was on. It was just to protest at Muslim leaders being granted funding for appeals and housing etc.. A van pulled up with 8 police, they jumped out, pulled down the banner. I went to see what was happening and they pushed me back; said we would be arrested for breach of peace (ie; there was no cameras there, and no reporters; this was of course a peaceful protest by 4 people with a placard); the following day a muslim protest was staged on the same square and nothing was done to curtail it, and it had full news coverage.
