Having a semi-wild pet cat works too.

One idea I had was to get a long tube, or maybe a tall vase or something, put a blob of something inside it like (as was suggested) Nuttella, place said tube or vase near to where the critter was last scene, and wait for him to emerge. I will stand waiting, then within a few minutes the little geezer will emerge, tip-toe across the lounge and run into the vessel for his feed. I will then cover over the end with a cushion or similar and he is trapped. I will then take him a few hundred yards outside and let him go. I know there will be others but I could keep doing this until they've all gone.

They will always come back, unless you can find where they are getting in, and block up their entry point.

And, as you said you live in a very old street, and I guess an old house, so good luck with that!

Kill the fuckers, Max. The first time I drowned one I couldn't look. The third time I took a peek. Glugging down water, eyes bulging. Eurgh. After half a dozen, I was enjoying the show. And soon after that, when they woke me up in the middle of the night, I'd be jumping up out of my bed, rubbing my hands with glee and grinning at the slaughter to come.

And Tom & Jerry mousetraps don't work after a while. They cotton on fast.

How so?
The ones that get their fucking necks crushed can't suss it out can they?
The next best thing is a fucking moggie.

I think the trick with the traps is not to handle them without gloves on because the little buggers get your scent.

We've got 2 cats. They both bring live mice into the house and then set them free !idontbelieveit!

there are mouse traps you can buy in any decent hardware shop that will live trap the mouse letting you release it preferably several miles away

I sealed off the cupboard which the little git ran out of last night by properly closing the door and putting a row of books along the bottom of it so the dood couldn't contort himself and get through the little half-inch gap underneath. I thought that would be enough. I am not working this week and am staying up late, I retired from the lounge about half an hour ago and came into the bedroom to go online. I thought I would put three small bits of cheese on a saucer, leave the saucer in the lounge, then after going online for a bit I would go to bed. I intended checking on the saucer tomorrow to see if any, or all, the cheese had gone. I suspected it would not have as, like I said, the cupboard where the little fiend appears to live I have closed up.

My curiousity got the better of me however and I went into the lounge just now - and one of the bits of cheese has gone! The crafty little bastard has sneaked in there and eaten one of the bits of cheese! In the last half-hour! He is clever, I will give him that. I considered leaving the other 2 bits of cheese on the plate so he could eat them as, hey, we are now kind of buddies, but I thought that it might just bring more into the flat and I would have an epidemic. So I threw the last two pieces of cheese into the bin and made sure the bin did not have any sly little gaps he could get into.

Tomorrow, I intend upping my game. So mouse beware!
