I concur with OEJ.

The southern European mentality and lifestyle is very different to that in the UK.

Down there, the pace of life tends to be far more relaxed, the diet is generally healthier (lots of fish, olive oil, fresh fruit & veg and what have you), and there's a larger "peasant" (not meant in the derogatory sense) population working the land and staying physicaly active well into old age.

Add to that a far healthier respect shown by younger people towards their elders, and you get a far more pleasant and healthy environment in which to grow old.

No surprise then that the average life span in southern European climes is longer, with lower incidences of heart disease and various cancers.

Guilbert,
I am over 70 and still fit and enjoying life but then I'm not in a Care Home"and never intend to be!

Deuce Bigolo,
I don't take any prescriptions medicines because they all have side effects and I exercise every day and eat organically grown food most of which I grow myself.
Most diseases of the brain are caused,in my opinion, by the side effects of widely prescribed drugs. I was surprised to learn that most of the people I know, family and friends were all taking the same NHS drugs at the same age and there was definitely an age correlation.

Arch Stanton,
Property is very cheap there but I don't know if the natives are friendly!

Generally very friendly. There is a real sense of community there and the villagers often come round offering free garden produce. Also property prices and cost of living very cheap.
