As an actor, he provided gravitas. See Branagh using him as the Actor King in Hamlet as an example, or better still him being dragged into Wayne's World II.

His politics were his own, and he was faithful to them, repugnant though they were to some of us.

In the late 1970s, he appeared on Parkinson and was asked about his Scottish heritage---something he was very proud of. He recalled being on a flight some years before, minding his own business, when he was approached by a fellow passenger---a Scot.

"Are you Charlton Heston?" the Glaswegian asked.

"Why, yes, I am," said Heston, expecting the guy to ask for his autograph.

"You bastard!"

"Sorry?"

"You bastard---I had a tenner on Stephen Boyd to win the chariot race."

RIP, Mr Heston. Thanks for Planet Of The Apes, Touch Of Evil, and having one of the great voices in American cinema. Could have done without the gun fetish and right-wing wet dreams, though.

He was a gun-nut long before Alzheimer's paid a visit.

Chuck was a big buddy of Ronnie Reagan back in the 1970s, so he was hardly Mr Liberal at any stage. Don't know when the NRA first chose him as figurehead, but I'm pretty sure he was a long-time member.

Watching some old West Wings just now, and there's an episode where a Republican tells the liberal White House staffer: "I could never work out why you anti-gun lot never just joined the NRA. Three million new members, call a vote on banning guns and that's game over."

Fuck his politics - didn't affect any of us did it ...!shrug!

Just a shame that another brilliant iconic legendary actor has passed away, here are some of my favourite "Charlton Heston" films from the last century:
The Call of the Wild
The Omega Man
Planet Of The Apes
Midway
Ben Hur
The 10 Commandments

every one a classic to my mind which I will no doubt enjoy when they are shown in tribute.

RIP Charlton Heston.

PEOPLE think Stephen Hawking is so clever, but when you ask him a question and he is typing in the answer on his little screen, how do we know he isn't just looking up the answer on the Internet?

I personally loved Soylent Green..............when you watch that it DOES make you wonder, especially given the mass food shortages around the world

You took the words right out of my mouth Ace, just about to watch "Soylent Green" right after "Match Of The Day 2", as you say with the way the world is heading and the mass greed of some of todays govenments and large corporations it could be a very prophetic film indeedy.

Do yourself a favour and track down a copy:

pretty scary stuff for something that was written in the 60's I think you will agree ...
