Also, there's a very high rate of re-offending. Wouldn't it be rather foolish to work hard knowing that the balance of probability is such that your efforts to rehabilitate will be wasted. You can have positive relations with inmates and treat them with respect, but if it kicks-off on the wing that isn't going to save you from having a chair thrown at you and worse.

Regretful as it my be, the prison officer's pay claim in parts is necessary to keep inflation down and retain low interest rates.

Cons love it when screws go on strike. No work, exercise for two hours, lie around all day and association in the evening watching TV.
Solidarity with the screws! Go for it! Demand shorter hours and more pay.
You looked after me and Ben Dover well when we were in the Scrubs abd you knew we we not real criminals.
