Culturally they were the right band at the right time, with the right songs and the right attitude. It was over when Noel shared drinkies with Tone, but they'd already made their mark by then. Musically they're hardly innovative, but I always liked their magpie sensibility, an equivalent to sampling perhaps. After all, it's only rock and rock.
You'd heard it all before, of course, but had you heard it like this? They weren't trying to re-invent the wheel, and made an interesting point about the weight of the past on any new band's shoulders, a weight that those sacred bands of the past maybe didn't have. Why not use it to your advantage?
And they still give the best interviews bar none.
