I thought it was quite an average episode until the watch came into it, then it all got much better. I never liked Anthony Ainley as the Master, but adding his chuckle to the sound mix as the professor began remembering who he really was added a nice touch, and then they went and added THE Master, Roger Delgado, as well to make me feel ten years old again.
Simm was bloody awful though, wasn't he.
Tonight's Doctor Who
Re: Tonight's Doctor Who
Check out some Jon Pertwee stories Harmony to see the one and only Master (Roger Delgado) in action. The Daemons and Terror of the Autons are good ones to start with.

From the Jon Pertwee years I just have "the three doctors" and "robot" if you class the 2 seconds he is in that one hee hee
I have seen "keeper of traken" - i think that Geoffery Beevers plays the master before he possesses Nyssa's dad

Re: Tonight's Doctor Who
I really wish they had left Derek Jacobi as the master, his performance was excellent...then we had the regeneration and I was less than impressed. heard the americans mention U.N.I.T in the preview of next weeks episode.
Re: Tonight's Doctor Who
Perhaps everyone should wait until John Simm has actually been in the role longer than ten minutes before starting to compare him with Masters of the past...
Roger Delgado was by all accounts the definitive Master, so all who follow in the role are always going to suffer by comparison...thought he did an especially good job of the part in the Mind of Evil, which I saw recently.
As for Anthony Ainley, he always did a good job during a period when the stories were getting more and more ludicrous...at least as far as I can remember!
As for tonights episode, was all a bit Mad Max - early 80's cheapo Italian post-apocalyptic movie for starters...but the revelation that Derek Jacobi was the Master was very well done...roll on next week!
And for one of the best Dr Who DVD's, you could do worse than check out the Tom Baker classic Pyramids of Mars...

Re: Tonight's Doctor Who
Which is the one with 'Field Major Styre' in it ? It's Tom Baker era I think and it's a corker.
Re: Tonight's Doctor Who
Must be The Sontaran Experiment.
As for Pyramid Of Mars, only two things need to be said: Robert Holmes, one of the great writers of the series.
Like Tim, I'm going to wait until we see Simm properly before giving my verdict----but Jacobi was brilliant.

Re: Tonight's Doctor Who
Sontaran Experiment it is. They're releasing the first Sontaran story, The Time Warrior, later this year.
Decent story (Bob Holmes again I think) with June Brown and Jeremy Bulloch in it. Dot Cotton and Boba Fett in the same show.

Re: Tonight's Doctor Who
I always thought Anthony Ainley was superb as The Master.
Will have to check out some stories with Roger Delgado in though.

Roger Delgado will always be the Master for me. He was a good actor (normally cast as a foreign villain in tv and movies) who tried to play the part straight.
While Anthony Ainley was good as The Master, he was always a little too pantomine baddie for me at times.
John Simm's opening as The Master was spot on for me as Time Lords are normally a bit erratic after a regeneration.
