Could "The Stern Report" be this year's "Dodgy Dossier" I wonder?!

As yet, global warming, and the suggested causes of it, are just a theory, and basing taxation policy on a theory is wrong.

Perhaps you should take a disinterested viewpoint of the contra-arguements, istead of dismissing them as being paid off by the oil companies simply because they don't fit in with the viewpoint you choose to side with.

I'm prepared to be convinced global warming is real, but as yet, the arguements just don't hold up, thats why yesterday was nothing more than "Think of the poor little children" spin.
We have need of you again, great king.

?All the recent media hype about global warming is shite?

Well, I don?t know about shite. Just look at the trees ? they should be sans leaves by now. When was the last time you saw an icicle or a snowdrift? They were fairly common when I was a child. The question is - is it a man made phenomena or part of some natural cycle? I feel it is probably is due to the activities of man. But what will the long-term consequences be and what can we do about it?

Now, the hand wringers will tell you that it means some insignificant Pacific Islands will be inundated and it will get a whole lot damper in the Ganges delta. Well, if that?s all, then like the man on the Clapham Omnibus and Cheryl Chav on Tesco?s checkout, I think I can live with it. If it also means that our summers will be more, well, ?summery? that?s fine (?fine?, get it?) by me. But if there is the prospect of more serious consequences ? like, possibly a runaway greenhouse effect (and you could hardly get more serious than that) that would heat up the Earth like the surface of Venus, then it might be worth looking at ways to avoid it.

There?s an awful lot to be said on this issue. The hand wringers want us all to adopt dour carbon neutral lifestyles where we don?t travel and go to bed early so that we don?t sit up burning the lights. But t'fuck with dourness. Dourness is OK for leather elbowed, muesli munching, university lectures and boring, earnest, people like that. That?s no good for me ? I prefer an ostentatious ?Wheyhey!? lifestyle. So, how can this be accommodated without frying the planet? Well, it?s quite simple really. Our current problems stem from the fact that there are now to many people on the planet consuming to many resources and, as a consequence, generating too much heat. So, we just need to get rid of 3 or 4 billion people, which would allow the remaining 2.5 ? 3.5 billion a bit more elbow (and carbon) room. In fact we need to do this anyway, since the Earth?s recourses are not finite and we are consuming them at an ever-increasing rate. Apart from global warming, this will have very serious consequences for humanity in the not to distant future. I recently read a report by an NGO that had worked out that the UK could not really (comfortably) support more that about 30 million people, yet we have 60 million and the fucking wanky Labour government are waving more in and having developers build ?Barrett? tower blocks in people?s gardens to accommodate them!

Yes, I agree. This 'Stern Report' is such a convenient, if not pressing, excuse for Labour to impose all sorts of dour, dogmatic, taxes on us. Taxes on individuality and success. It?s well suspicious. So, I say, bollocks to 'em! They're trying to shaft us!

It may be a dumb post but its got you all going, now dont get me wrong i am as much against pollution as anyone but taxation will only add to it as the money collected has to be put back into the economy which in itself will cause more pollution and will probably result in the deaths of more old people in winter (dibbles post) and i doubt if it will save one polar bear in the artic. If this goverment are serious about it they should be thinking about alternative energy sources, to my knowledge only one windfarm has been approved sited in Kent, people dont want windfarms near them yet they put preservation orders on old windmills, we are surrounded by sea with 2 tides every 24 hours ebbing and flowing a natural energy but nothing is done to capture it, i also know that a grid that goes over the road has been patented so when a car etc runs over it electricity is generated but all this goverment wants to do is charge us tolls to use the roads that belong to us,, instead of more taxation they should be thinkink of less in the way of reduced council tax if you have a wind turbine or solar panels attached to your property, yes my post is dumb and so is this so called green tax, and if you dont believe in my sincerity i do the London Naked Bike Ride every year which is a protest against oil dependency and other green issue ,ask aj.broadband as she also takes part, maybe some of you should join us next year i would love to see Dibble on his bike naked !love!!thumbsup!!love!

How come this Taxing strategy wasn't mentioned by Labour last year..... You know the year we had the General Election...

How much longer is this bloody nightmare of a government going to be "looking after" our country?

ok fair enough if you meant the post as a way to start a discussion, maybe I got a bit too miffed too early.
but my general theme I stand by, the vast majority of people aren't going to do anything that means them changing their lifestlyle. If this is the case (and people have known about this issue for years) then maybe they are going to have to be forced into it, for example charging people extra to do the school run, when I was a kid we'd have been laughed at it if a parent dropped us off from a mile away, now it's the norm
The good thing about this report is that it focuses on the economics of the situation, which people might sit up and take notice of.
I've spent the last ten years or so advising companies how to better use water and energy, if I went to company x and said
'add this piece of kit to your steam generation plant and it will reduce carbon emissions and help save the planet'
they most likely would say 'fuck off you tree hugger'
if I said
'add this piece of kit and it will save you half a million quid in gas and water a year', then they take notice

reducing what we use isn't too difficult, it just takes some thought and a change of mindset, we don't really have a choice

we are Leeds.... , and we can still beat the mighty Chester

Peter..................I just gave scientific FACTS. I'm not a politician or news reporter.

CO2 traps heat, that's a FACT. Burning fossil fuels causes more CO2, that's a FACT.

If more taxation on cars & petrol starts making people walk the 300 yds to the corner shop, I'm all for it as long as the extra money goes to new technology on creating greener cars and industry.

Planeterotica started a thread called 'Global warming is crap' and I just stated some FACTS along with some very sensible theories, from very very smart people. These very very smart people do not just come from the UK. They're smart people from Sweden, Switzerland, Brazil, Russia, Japan, New Zealand etc etc etc....

A theory is a theory, but when scientific fact backs up that theory, you can pretty much rely on that theory having some truth in it!
