Not for the fun of it. They do it because it's expected of them. Here are some real stats for you in your dream world:

Innocent people shot: 2
Guilty people shot: 0

Number of people stopped and searched since 7/7: over 10,000
Number of terrorists detected using this method: 0

Number of false arrests in Britain on terrorist charges since 9/11: over 1,000

Number of terrorist plots detected and stopped: 0

False chemical weapons plots printed all over the daily papers: 2 (one false ricin plot, and this recent false plot).

Face it: the police aren't getting anywhere in the fight against terrorism. And luckily the scale of the threat is much smaller than politicians claim - or we'd be fucked.

Even by your own standards, that's a ludicrous statement.

You know what they say about statistics.

In any case, God knows where you got those figures from: 10,000 stopped against 0 detected for example. Or "0 terrorist plots detected" - how would YOU know?? Seems to me that either:

(a) You have inside information from the security services that the rest of us aren't privy to, or

(b) You picked these figures up on one of the crackpot "conspiracy theory" Web sites you like to frequent, or

(c) You're quoting them from a newspaper article that some hack penned (presumably in the very same papers that you accuse of running "false" chemical weapon plots, but choose this time to selectively take what they say as gospel because it fits in with your own view of the world), or

(d) You picked them out of thin air.

You're the one living in a "dream world", me old cocksparra!

These facts show me the police are trying hard to find terrorist threats, and their actions are making the 'real' terrorists keep a very low profile!
Number of false arrests in Britain on terrorist charges since 9/11: over 1,000
Falsely arrested people or, wrongfully killed people? You can always 'un-arrest' someone but once they've been blown to pieces, there's no turning back SB!
Number of terrorist plots detected and stopped: 0
Again, maybe because they've ceased operations for now, due to the police's new powers? Maybe they're feeling the heat eh? The police may not have detected any because all plans have ceased quickly -or delayed- and evidence gotten rid of?!

My 2penny's worth is that the police always do a thankless task. Nobody like's em, until they're needed!

If they're not getting anywhere it's due in no small measure to the "human rights" lobby and people like you just waiting for them to fuck-up so that you can have a go at them - which of course plays into the hands of terrorists, criminals and other miscreants in general.

I'm not saying that the police don't make mistakes. I'd even agree with you that Blair & Co. are a bunch of corrupt, incompetent fools. There are no doubt a few "bad apples" in the police force as well.

To claim as you're doing though that the police are nothing more than a bunch of Orwellian thugs, that there's no terrorist threat and that it's all just a big conspiracy by the politicians is just plain daft.

Yes, they probably (mis)use the situation to a degree as an excuse to push forward their own agendas, but the threat exists, and if it takes a few more CCTV cameras, longer check-in times at airports, a few doors being kicked in from time to time and more people being stopped and searched as a precaution (even if nothing's found), I'll take that over mass murder any day of the week.

We just need to find the right balance between civil liberties and security, and maybe that hasn't happened yet.

That's all stricklybroadband knows Marty and Eric.

No doubt the bloke arrested and jailed today will just be another innocent.

Best thing to do with strickly's post is ignore them and if you can't just reply with BOLLOCKS.

He'll probably come back with some silly response but BOLLOCKS is a lot easier than typing a full reply and about as much use.
