Well Damon Hill might have been "nothing special" to some, but he won one F1 championship, and would have won another but for the fact that Schumi drove into him and took him out of the race.
As to the Panzer thing, there's just something about the arrogant sneer in his face, allied to his cynical behaviour on the track, that tells me that 60 years ago he'd have been just as happy commanding a Tiger whilst "only obeying orders." Let's put it like this: I don't think he would have bothered taking many prisoners, do you?

Oh the usual load of bollocks. Sure he's no nice guy but people at the very top of their game rarely are. I'm fucking glad he drives for my team as he's the best in the business.

It's not a cheap jibe about the war, I'm just saying Schumi looks to me like the worst sort of arrogant German. His behaviour on the track bears this out. And he's not the best in the business any more. What a shame.

I have to agree with the views you have expressed Keith regarding this subject. Schumacher is without doubt the most talented F1 driver of the modern era, if not in the history of the sport. Silly remarks about German alleged German behaviour in the war does not enhanced the debate. Nevertheless in the Monaco incident I believe Michael was guilty and that the stewards acted correctly.
On a not unrelated subject and I am not necessarily meaning F1, I do find it irratating the way British sports' commentators sometimes go on about a brilliant British performance when it is anything but brilliant. John Motson please note!

I'd like to plant at least 3 seeds of doubt...
Nikki Lauda
Ayrton Senna
Alain Prost
Schumacher is far from being *the* most talented F1 driver of the modern era. He has been fortunate that his and his team's bending/breaking of the rules have only seen small fines rather than bans (which rival teams have had to endure!
Of all the drivers I've seen since the late 60s when I first started following F1 (anyone remember Raymond Baxter doing the commentary on Grandstand...long before that buffoon Murray Walker was allowed near a microphone?) Schumacher doesn't even make my top 10 "talented" drivers... if we talk about F1 since 1990, he just about creeps into the top 5

I see Michael's private jet parked at the GA part of Geneva airport quite often when I am in and out of there. I have chatted with some of the airport people who know him and they say his public face is very very different to his private one.
He is well known in Switzerland for his charity donations etc. Also he was the highest personal donator to the Tsunami, giving millions, but wanting little or no publicity from it.
I would like to see a bit of this "fire" in the likes of Jenson Button who to me, has not got the strength in mind to win the world championship, or even a race at the moment !

"How many Germans do you actually know? Where do you get your 'arrogant German' stereotype from? Is it from real life or something you saw in a movie...."
Well he's a German, and he's arrogant. You do the math.
When he retires the record books will show how many championships Schumi has won, but few people will remember him with any affection. Basically, he was an efficient and talented driver, but no sportsman.
He may or may not give heavily to charity, I have no way of knowing. I do know he's a cheat, because I've seen it. That's why I've got no time for him. The sad thing is he's good enough not to need to cheat, but he just can't help himself. That's some character defect.
