Can't go with the Beatles, as already mentioned very very mediocre musicians, great writers and innovative but a lot of that was down to great studio staff.

For musicianship it has to be Deep Purple. Lord, Blackmore and Paice are all virtuoso players, Glover was more than adequate and Gillan's voice is stunning. Yardbirds were also hugely talented, and Cream.
Yes also had mega talented musos but the music disappeared up their own posteriors!

The Jam were Ok. The Who gave us masterpieces and pure bilge in equal proportions. Clash totally overrated, fashionable more than musical and their politics were hilarious, who gave a fuck about Central America anyway?, I like New order but not mega band, long long time since they wrote anything as good as Thieves or Blue Monday.

For influence try Black Sabbath, so many rock bands owe a huge amount to the Sabs.

My personal faves are Pink Floyd and Zeppelin.

I'd go for The Who.

Amen to that. Rock bands are something we do fucking well in this country; Pink Floyd, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones, Queen, Jethro Tull, The Who, Fleetwood Mac, Cream, Genesis, Iron Maiden...they're all bloody great bands. Zooming in on my own turf I'll nominate Depeche Mode, Prodigy and a quarter of U2.
