the tariff depends on the judge at the time, the purpose of the life sentence for 'other' crimes is so that they can be recalled to prison at any time for any reason (such as if they feel they person has begun to drink too much etc) and are always on parole and thus monitored to an extent
some info here

Lara, i really dont agree with u at all.
Attempted murder/muder can only apply if you intentionally tried to/did kill the person.
i.e i'm in a pub and someone is bugging me and he goes for me and i punch him and he dies as a result of that punch, should i be done for murder? of course not.
But if i had thought 'right i'm going home to get a knife and i'm going to sort this bastard' and i come back and knife him then naturally that is murder.
We lock up more people in this country than any other country in europe and yet we still have higher crime rates. and we sentence more people longer here than any other country in europe, so i'm not sure locking them up is the answer.
Getting to the root cause of what causes crime is the answer - dealing with people's dispair, their empty voids and their feeling of hopelessness.
No one is ever born evil or a bad un and born to wanna have a life in crime.
I come from a really rough part of Scotland and when i was younger it was touch and go as to whether i would make something of my life. My parents, who didnt have a pot to piss in, always drummed into me that education was my ticket to a better life. I chose that route and have never looked back.
When i go back home i meet old school mates and they tell me they have just come out of prison from one thing or another. when i was at school with these guys they were first rate and not bad uns at all - so something is turning them that way and locking them up aint the answer!

Yes but if someone was bugging you and you had a knife, the fact that you actually pulled that knife out and attempted to stab him, you can't say 'well I was just standing up for myself/I wasn't going to hurt him really, but he moved to the left a bit when I stabbed him in the stomach but I was really aiming for his lung!' What I'm saying is, if you've got a knife/blade and you pull it out on someone, you are attempting to cause serious injury, not just a paper cut!

I agree, that is why the charge of GBH means life, you damage someone with a knife/axe/bat etc etc you can get a life sentence, simple
