Mmm, thought I was arguing PT's point of view, Sandie, not agreeing with him.

Oh well, misunderstood again!

No matter how hard up anyone is here, they're not going to die of starvation or poverty (except in an extreme isolated incident). I think we have a duty to stop the starving, even if our standard of living doesn't rise as fast - In African terms we are all rich.. If nothing else, surely they deserve a right to clean water, sanitation, basic medicines and an education.

Sometimes its really hard to sort the genuine needy from the bullshitters - although the fakes usually go way over the top with ragged clothes and unlikely sob stories. I give money to the genuine because I'm single with a good income and I dont want to live in a society where the down and out feel that no one gives a shit. It creates a crime class and just bites us eventually anyway.

And then of course.....I once gave a chick ( who was almost certainly a career begger ) $10. $2 which she asked for plus $8 because the skirt she wore was split right up the sides and gave me the horn. She understood.

I don't think people are afraid to say what they think, it's just (as you have noticed) bugger all people agree with you.

putting the price of your petrol above a child dying because it doesn't have access to clean water is hardly a commendable attitude to have, and most people don't see the difference between a UK child and an African child.

We happen to live in a global society these days, you may have noticed this fact
