What I'm suggesting is nothing of the sort.

If by a pat on the head you mean Community Service & a good behaviour bond I agree its a wasted exercise

If you truly want to break the cycle of despair & consequent mindless acts
you've got to give people HOPE.

Leaving everything up to the Economy & the free market has never worked
so why do we continue down this route where the rich get richer and the poor & depressed get desperate

The Ghettoes that have been allowed to flourish over the past 20/30 years have got to be disbanded.They are just breeding grounds for trouble

Only trouble is that there are no votes in rehabilitation9which would cost a mint)just Punishment so it will never happen

The truth is if we don't take a middle ground approach where the almighty profit & social cohesion are equals and not in competiiton we will fail

Will be like returning to the middle ages if we do,every man for himself

Kids wouldn't take any notice

The police wouldd just be picking up kids and taking them home as happens in many Australian Rural towns where aboriginal youths run amok
It simply doesn't work because the kids don't care about their future

Other places with similar problems found that if you ran some activities as simple as a free basketball game/soccer game/barbecue a couple of times a week for the whole community and actually spoke to the youths you got better results.

They're still hanging out together but their not just twiddling their thumbs looking to make trouble

A lot of petty crime(not all) comes from boredom IMHO

A couple of years back, I read a book by some historian (A.N. Wilson, I think) about the Victorian period, and he cited a case in which two lads took a younger child and drowned it in a river. They weren't jailed, as they were considered below the age of criminal responsibility. Can't recall what punishment they did receive, but they grew up to be productive members of society---unlike their victim, who never got the chance to grow up.

But say the words child-killers and Victorian age together, and everyone would assume the murderers would have been hanged, that the local community might have formed a lynch mob to carry out summary justice--but no.

At that time, there were no tabloid newspapers feeding hatred, so maybe that's why a judge could take a decision like he did and get away with it.

Today, with all the Suns and Mails and Mirrors foaming at their editorial mouths, there'd be thousands of ordinary people baying for blood.

Children killing children isn't new---it didn't emerge from a video nasty to the boys who killed Jamie Bulger. There are problems in society, sure, but as Holden and Buttsie say, a knee-jerk reaction might satisfy the public in the short term, but it isn't going to do anything about the underlying faults.

Oh, and Dibble, no matter how elegantly dressed they were, remember it was the Nazis that started the second world war, not the Chavs. You need to get a sense of perspective. What you call Chavs have existed for decades in various forms. You have a brain, so don't be dragged sheeplike along the line the Daily Mail's leader has drawn.

I think the main group your looking for is Bikies(not all of them mind you)
Just the ones that build their club rooms with a 2 metre high perimeter fence made out of foot thick concrete pylons-sound proofing no doubt

They make Chavish offenders look like choir boys

A friend of mine wrote a loan for a Bikie and when asked wether he needed insurance he said the tenants would behave themselves or else,so no thank you

Good point re:Nazi's Crackers.
Chav's are the least of the worry in the grand scheme of things.
