Right you soft shite,s! Firstly it,s a students job to get as drunk and loud as possible, then to jump of anything thats available, if you break something-thats a bonus, if you kill yourself, well! shit happens, doesn,t matter if it,s Oxford or Manchester poly, (although jumping from the bridge that spans Oxford road would result in certain death), but would also mean a good piss up in the bar to commiserate after.
As a Student you owe it to yourself and your family/friends etc, to be as obnoxious as possible, fail all your exams at the first attempt, then take a year out on the piss to get your act together. I dont think Oxford is any different than any other uni, it has it,s traditions as do all uni,s, and one of them is jumping off bridges whilst pissed.
Good luck to them, as my mate Magoo would say....bridges! Iv,e pissed em.

From my lofty height that paradox does not escape me.

I have nothing to prove to anybody. I'm too old for that. I actually only mentioned my background because the post had a pop at 'Oxbridge students'. My point was simply that they were kids, and I thought the Oxbridge-bashing was a bit unfair. Sorry if it came across as blowing my own trumpet...one talent I would dearly love to have.

Unlike the middle classes I have no illusions about the scum I grew up with, and don't feel the need to pretend otherwise, or indulge in Guy Ritchie-style worship of them. Bloody tourist. I don't believe growing up poor gives me any cred, but it did give me great streets and the sense to know that aspiring to rise is a good thing. If that's elitism then good.

I shall now retire in a huff to my ivory tower and dine on swan and quince, whilst watching the most excellent Mr Marino serving up a dose of elite pornographic televisual entertainment.

There is no doubt Cambridge/Oxford are the two best academic institutions in the UK, but they will never match Harvard. Currently they're ranked 3rd & 8th in the world, but it will be interesting to see where they stand in 5 years time, because most of the top US universities are better funded.

I didn,t say Oxford or Manchester were not boring, merely as a student you have certain resposibilities, and one is getting pissed...
