I believe in the case of Ken Bigley that british intelligence attempted to bribe one of the hostages to let him free which is said (allegedly) to be the reason why he managed to escape for half an hour or so before he (and the captor) got tracked down and caught by the terrorists.

I'd guess that the turncoat captor met a pretty damn unpleasant ending as well.

Robert Fisk (who knows far more about Iraq than all of us put together) writing in The Independent says that the videos didn't bear any of the usual hallmarks of the other kidnap videos. He suggests that it may be the work of the current regime.

Fisk isn't exactly a pin-up boy at the White House. If he's right, though, then we're just setting up another Saddam who, 20 years down the line, will be plotting against us all. And so the cycle of stupidity continues.
