Sorry, Caractacus, but Steve is really right here.
The real Engelbert Humperdinck was born in Siegburg in 1854 and died in Neustrelitz in 1921. His best known work is the opera H?nsel und Gretel.

You can find more information at, for instance:

I don't think Caractacus was querying the existence of the "real" EG but pointing out steve56's Irishism (hope thats not a racist term).

Whichever, Mart was right with regard my complaint. Since I have a recording somewhere around the cave of Herr Humperdinck's Hansel And Gretel, I knew he existed and what he had done.

Sorry, cannot respond, trying to phone the emergency RUbonkers hotline. Steve has finally got me teetering on the edge of sanity, and MAD thinking I'm a philistine has pushed me over.

Wibble.

Actually, I'm not sure what's worse---me going mad, or you actually being on S56's wavelength (speaking of which, the RAF police will be hammering at your door any minute).

But M_A_D is forgiven for his small error, after all what's our colloquial Dutch like.
Got to tell you a lovely story about a Dutch girl and colloquial English. I heard her say to her boss, re. a extensive piece of correspondence from France which had been mislaid " I found that long French letter crumpled up in your waste-paper basket".
