I'm surprised the shops have lasted as long as they have. They are like a throw back to the 60's, with even a statutory sleaze-ball (with toothpick) manning the till. The whole sex business in this country is based on the premise of , "There's always another mug" and it will be great to see these shops slowly curl up and die.

Yeah, but there are many "distributors" who also retail as well, for example on the web.

With shops getting all the stick at the moment how long do you think it'll be before internet sites get stung for the same license fee's as shops, once they have gone internet sites will have the same stick as they get now. The only clear winner will be satilitte, who will buy hardcore when they can watch it for a small fee. This is why producers are trying their hardest to get onto sat channels now, if web-sites had to pay very high licenses as shops do you think they could sell their films for ?20 ? no chance. At the moment we have it good but for how long who knows.

Thanks for the replies, lads. What I found VERY odd was that this was a bit 'above the normal' scruffy type sex shops and even had 2 Ben Dover OFFICIAL logos on the wall including the Ben Logo on the intro of his films. Iv'e seen Bens DVDs retail at a very respectable ?25 and NOT the OTT ?40 sold here.
The establishment in question is next door to Birmingham Academy venue

no. my ex boyf runs a sex shop in the midlands and in his words... "its great i get 500% mark up. where else could i get away with that?"

in the majority of cases the shops/websites decide the price. if i had it my way british bukkake babes would be ?40
like the rest of the bukkake stuff but no,the retailers decide therefore most of the time BBB is being sold for between ?15 - ?30.

Then, YES- there is a minumum buried under all that profiteering, isn't there? A straight retailer (assuming there are any) would merely add their overheads, and a reasonable premium for profit.

That depends on whether or not you're selling direct to them, surely? If they went through an intermediate wholesaler, then they'd add their cut too, presumably, and a retailer would then pass that on to the punter.

There seems to be an undercurrent in this thread that sex shops are profiteering and generally taking the piss. I don't believe they are. Of course they did in the 60' 70's and 80's. But then again they were entitled to as they were, in many instances, putting their asses on the line and risking incarceration to service the demand for decent (explicit) erotica. And, from a customers point of view, so long as they were getting what they were paying for, they were quite happy to pay over the odds to.

I noticed the exorbitant sum of ?40.00 bandied about. ?40.00!? Really!? How perfectly shocking! But hold on, let's just put that into perspective. When I bought my first genuine John Lyndsey shag video (on Betamax) in 1980 or 81. That's what it cost me, ?40.00. But the average take home pay at that time was ?80-100 pounds a week! If you carried the same price/pay ratio through to today you would be paying ?200.00 quid plus for a video! The fact is that price wise you've never had it so good. When you stand back and look at the bigger picture I'm sure you'll see that whining about current prices is not really justified.

Videokim is right, nowadays many sex shops are just scraping by, they simply have to lump a sizable profit on to the odd items they do sell to get through the week. The fact is that nowadays there generally aren't enough sex punters around to support a thriving shop. Even if there's the same amount of potential punters in the UK as there was twenty years ago, they are now dissipated amongst many other sex outlets - more shops, sat TV, the moody geezer down the boot sale, and as Kim points out, the internet. So all that potential punter money is being divided up into ever smaller chunks. So small in fact that its not much use to anyone anymore.
