Lets not forget ATVOD and keeping the internet free are two very different subjects.

I would say the latter was bigger than just protecting porn which the government dont really care much about. They just want to control the most important tool to national security since the invention of the radio so they an use it to implement new laws to invade our privacy since MI5 was met with resistance about keeping records of our emails and phone calls.

Again, control of the internet even outweighs even this

I agree with Terry.

ATVOD are not responsible for the biggest threat to the Internet. The ISP filters are, I think energy should be focused on the issue of the automatic, by default, blocking of content, all content, on the Internet and then we revisit the ATVOD situation at a later date.

As an industry we struggle to gain support for the smallest of tasks lets not use what limited support we have in targeting a body already enshrined in UK Law. Lets focus on the legislation to come that will restrict your activities further.

I for one fail to understand fighting ATVOD when there is great potential for many of us and International operators to lose a big chunk of our audience - which will happen with auto blocks and filters.

We have two fights for sure, but if the cause you are rallying support for is seeking a free internet for all then we should, in my opinoun, prioritise the ISP filter legislation (and any new legislation to increase ATVOD powers).

People should do both. It isn't hard to follow, support and be kept informed of whats going on

We shouldn't just be mindful of what is coming at us sideways at the expense of what could be coming at us from the front and behind...Or above and below even. Porn is a good stomping ground for people to make their name. David Cameron. Claire Perry. Ed Vaizey. Pete Johnson to name a few

In my opinion the ISP filters are not really the major issue that some say they are. I may have missed something, of course, but if they are merely filters that are set by default but can be switched off at the point of purchase, or at any other time by the adult who holds the contract with the ISP, then they are only a minor inconvenience. What's more, then under 18s will be only able to access the unfiltered internet subject to the acquiescence of their responsible adult. In which case responsibility for under 18s, if they must be protected from themselves, lies where it belongs, with the adult responsible for making the decisions they are deemed incapable of. So long as the internet is not censored against the wishes of adult subscribers, there isn't a major problem.

Personally I'm against censorship, full stop. But possibly there are those who want to control and indoctrinate the poor wretches in their care. Society doesn't interfere in every detail of how adults bring up children. So long as they don't impose their bigoted illiberal ideas on me, I'm content to let them get on with it. Equally it isn't too big a deal whether I have to request lack of censorship, as opposed to the others having to request the filter to be turned on.

But maybe there's something I haven't understood in the ISP controversy.

Exactly OEJ "information superhighway". "Information is power" but that is something the "authorities" don't want the "ordinary man in the street" to have too much of.

The ATVOD issue is different. It is a monstrous attempt to deny freedom of expression. Were it not for the fact that some people stood up and objected, Atvod would be regulating and controlling all newspaper websites, all football club websites, large parts of YouTube, and almost every other website with a video on it. They aren't because the other objects of Atvod's attentions have put up reasoned objections. Because Atvod has not met much of a fight from adult websites it feels it has the green light to redefine its purpose to carry on where Mary Whitehouse left off. They will never leave off unless they are challenged. It's insidious. Once they get adult video websites all trussed up, they won't stop until Lady Chatterley's Lover is a banned book and the punishment for not accepting the 39 articles is amputation of the ears and nose.

There is an opportunity now to challenge the lawfulness of Atvod's activities. Ofcom/Atvod won't take any debate seriously unless they must. The incipient pressure group, "Nafforf Atvod", allows the possibility to engage Ofcom in pre-action correspondence that they are bound to reply to as the rules of court provide. That means that they have to respond within a timetable, and they must directly address the issues raised. "Nafforf Atvod" contends that Ofcom/Atvod is acting in a way that is incompatible with the European Convention Right to 'Freedom of Expression'. If necessary the issue can be decided by the Court, but first Ofcom/Atvod must show a defence if they have one.

All that is being asked of readers of this forum is to show support for the idea of a challenge. If you like Atvod sit on your hands. If you don't like it visit or better follow on twitter . Nothing else is asked of anyone. If you want to help with money or any other way, shout. But that is totally optional. Your support really counts, it only requires minimal effort.
