Hi,
I use a mac also, if you download the Flip for mac free codec it supposedly allows Imovie to render out WMV files. However the best piece of software out there that I use for my site is iskysoft media convertor. You have to pay for it but its worth it and not that expensive. It lets you output to any format with a wide selection of files including WMV. As far as setting for the file it depends on quality, the higher the settings the bigger the file and I would say you don't want a file over 500mb as it puts people off, if you are using HD video files then 500mb is expected so people don't mind, don't ask me why this is just based on experience from be having ran two content sites to date.

I used to set my WMV files at 1500kbps or 2000kbps and that gives you good quality file. I just use MOV files as they are hight quality and I just have a link to the quicktime or VLC player on my site and offer a free clip for people to test before downloading and paying for content.

Hope this helps

Cheers

Paul

Thanks all for the advice.

Just one further issue if anyone can help on this, i have some content going back a few years. The dvd works fine on a PC and you can view the movie. On a mac the video does not run, instead you can only view a folder which has the parts to the video, i.e audio, TS files.

Now i can drap and drop the TS files into Roxio Toast and covert them into video to view, the only problem is the video itself is cropped around the edges, hence you essentially get an oval which is black around the edges. Also the video quality is not any good.

Will any of the suggested video converting software mentioned in the various postings above allow you to conver ts video into proper video?

Thanks.

wmv? thats windows based - i always use .mov or .mo4 / .mv4

generally hd on the web is 1280x720 (aka 720p) - around 2000-3000kbps, 92kbps for aac (these are general settings)

Why is wmv so common on pay sites? surely mp4/h.264 is better due to smaller file sizes with excellent image.

btw op i am a pro video editor / videographer - i use final cut pro - encode for web using quicktime pro etc..
