Keep the content on the original tapes as well, then you can re-import, re-edit and re-render everything later on, when you find out there's a different way to do things.

Thanks again dudes, the advice is all really good. I hadn't bargained on buying a laptop as well as another desktop but that seems like it may be the best way forward eventually.
It seems that as soon as I think I am on track, something new pops up for me to wrestle with!!

We use only Macs in our office but I use my Powerbook Pro to fry eggs on. I used it to edit (FCP) Bukkakeslave#1 on during Tigerr's shoot at Killergram and I nearly poached my bollocks.

Holy s*&t, that is a beast! Maybe I should look more closely into the quad core. The price isn't hugely more than the MBP really.

Does anyone have any experiences with reconditioned Apple kit?
I guess the old knackered parts have been stripped out and replaced with new so I am thinking they must be as good as new?

The 'best' thing for editing in FCP? A Portable DTE Recorder!!

No farting around capturing HD or file converting. Stick it straight in...yes.

So could I plug say, a Z1 directly into a DTE recorder and edit film like that without the need for a computer?
Sorry to be a pest but I'm learning as I go.
On that note, FCP? What is that and also what is a DTE recorder and where would I look for one?

I've bought all my latest macs (five) from the refurb store. Usually, they're new kit thats had a fault and been exchanged rather than second hand ' used', so it may have arrived new to a customer, who found the DVD drive wasn't working, they've exchanged it for a complete new box, sent the old one back where it gets the drive replaced, tested and sold as a refurb because its no longer technically new. All mine have been cosmetically perfect, and you still get a years warranty with it.

I'd recommend it.
