How do they do it?

Post by keithphillips »

Keith Richards@The Edge Glamour Models.

I have mpl studios on my site as an affiliate. Can anyone explain how they get such clear and crisp images as below.

Their banner is on my links page if you want to see more.

I'm not exactly sure but these sites will only accept submissions in either raw or the highest quality photoshop jpeg and they monitor compression...dont ask me how, but I've had my fingers rapped for resizing images slightly upwards and interfering with the compression.

I am fairly sure all the bigger HI res sites like MPL, Femjoy, Met have specific software for achieving optimum compression making their images pin sharp.

With Femjoy for instance the photographer uploads the images directly to the server and can view them at full res after upload. When I look at an image full res in PS and then look at it again full res in their server veiwer the difference is remarkable, every single hair, blemish and skin pore can be seen so there is no room for error... lighting, exposure and focus and any healing of blemishes have to be spot on. An eye apparently in focus in PS, can cause embarrasment when viewed in the server viewer and any attempt at skin blurring or that type of jiggery pokery will certainly make you look foolish.

I've never shot for or had any contact with MPL, but I suspect they use the same system.

Just like some Japanese sites, amazing images, amazing quality, colors, sharpness and a ridiculously small file size. inthecrack.com also springs to mind. There is a bit more to this than photoshop post production.

By sharpness do you mean, the fact the clouds, the tree's, the sand and the girls are all in focus and clear ?

Thats achieved by an extremly slow aperture, my guess is F22+ or there abouts, on very good quality glass at very high high raw res. It could have been even shot on medium format. I also think a polariser has been used as well, to allow a longish exposure and lower aperture. (its also poss a ND has been used as well to slow it even more).

The girls also have at least 3 soft reflectors (my guess is a couple black, and a couple trans) that I can make out, to stop the girls washing out.

There is undoubtably been some photoshop work on there but its been done in RAW Dialogue boxes, rather than photoshop, and its been stored as a TIFF file.

Its certainly very technically proficient, and very good use of the biggest mofo flash in the universe :)

It is said that both love and truth walk hand in hand. But if the need is great enough, can we learn to love a lie?

I agree with Cenobitez.
We shoot in RAW with 5D Canons, and post in TIFF. We use 2.8F Pro lenses, and a simple set-up is around ?5,000 of camera and lens. This gives 28mb to 44mb files and the finish similar to above. And yes, it would be 16 to 32F stop for depth of filed.

As pointed out good location and plenty of lighting make the difference. I have noticed this since I got my D2Xs and pro lens rather than box lens. Shooting in bright sunshine allows you to shoot above F16 and get everything in focus.

I tend to like artistic blur in the foreground and background so shoot quite often at F2.8. This gives, what I counsider, a more 3 dimensional feel to photos.

At the end of the day it is down to preference.

I have also heard that editing RAW first and then exporting as tiff is the way to go.

Whilst we are on the web image quality thing, i wanted to ask if anybody has a preference for web output of standard RGB or Adobe RGB or if there is any difference anyway with these settings on camera, camera software and any post production s/w ie photoshop and back up to web.
