We are realy in OT territory, but porn is not in the same league
as mainstream cinema.

There is a lot of vanity in each, but of course you don't (usually) get the
explicit sex in a mainstream movie. So for mainstream cinema
all you have is viewers and critcs blabber on about how good or bad
the movie was or how good or bad was a particular actor or actress'
performance. By "performance" we mean, was he/she convincing in that role,
did he/she make you laugh/cry/feel sympathy, etc for them?
In porn we evaluate "performance" as to whether she was
sensual, erotic, hot, slutty, whether she gave us a woody, whether
we would want to see her again in another movie/scene.

But here's the thing, for many years now, porn perfrmers are
generally not under contract. There's nothing for a distributor
to really push a particular performer to a "star system" level like
mainstream cinema does. That actress will proably be out of the
porn industry within the next 6 months to a year. So they shoot the scene
with her and goodbye. Maybe they will hire her again, but the "shelf life"
of the average porn performer is a short one.
With that in mind and with the glut of porn being produced,
there is a push to keep production costs and per scene rates low and
lower.
In mainstream cinema we often hear the absurd salaries paid to a
particular performer. We also often hear what the movie cost and
its gross at the box opffice the first week, second week, overall, overseas, etc.
In porn you are told nothing.
So what do you get? A youngish girl/woman who "smilingly" stands in front
of a video camera and says that she is there to be gang fucked (er.. abused)
by 5 guys, and that she will perform anal, DP, double anal and double vaginal.
Of course the guys (mysoginists) in the scene buy all that shit, as is the case
with the director and the poor gullible consumer.
Some performers/directors have risen up fast in the porn industry
and have made a name for themselves, but after a while you start hearing
ridiculous nonsense: I have fucked 13,000 women, I have starred in 1,400 movies,
I never used drugs, I can get it up and keep it up for hours without any help from
any pill or whatever, I don't know anyone in the business who uses drugs, I have been
in the business for several years and I have never had a STD, I don't know anyone who escorts,
if I shot any gay stuff it was "gay for pay" as I'm not really gay and I just did only a
couple of scenes for the money, I have no criminal record, never had any
runs ins with the law, I am not a flake and always show up on time for a
scheduled shoot, my parents are really OK with me being in porn, I had a happy
childhood, I had sex for the first time when I was 12 (why do porn directors
and interviewers seem overly fixated in asking a porn female performer
when they had sex for the first time; is it something we really need to know,
and if told do you really believe it?).
How many porn sites or porn blogs that really exist on the web that provide
porn "gossip" or that you would find even remotely reliable? They all run
"press releases", but where is the meaty porn gossip?

The vanity in porn? How many directors get to fuck talent on screen in
porn? Only a handful? Quite a few? Why is that? To cut down costs
(instead of paying 4 male performers, he casts only 3 and he fills in the other
scene), because he can't get laid otherwise, because that's the only way he
can fuck performer XYZ? How really attractive or "talented" are these
directors that get to fuck female talent on screen? Who feeds these female performers
those lines they say that makes their co-star/director feel like they have just
have had the most wonderful fuck in their life? At the end of the scene, does that
director really believe she was really that turned on?
Don't forget, usually the girl does not get paid until the scene is completed
and she signs off a "release".
Perhaps some mainstream viewing may be in order, say like EX MACHINA
where a AI dressed up as a very attractive female is obviously "flirting" with
a young 26-year-old male and he is asked (something like this): "does she really
like you, or is she just pretending to like you?"

I assume many male perfs. continue way past their sell-by because they
don't know how to do anything else; and because they'd otherwise never
get laid. Which of course doesn't explain why they keep getting work.....
and while the more self-aware/self-critical of them may think 'time to go',
they have little incentive if work's still out there. And while having to
watch these ugly old scrotes climbing all over pretty young girls is fairly
gruesome, my main reaction is more often a wave of pity for these befuddled
dotards : -) And of course sympathy for the girls.

Going even further O/T: the other main point in your post - the increasing
ephemerality of porn - is one which has led me to to the belief that we
may as well not bother cataloguing anyone who started after about 2009,
when video-websites really got going. Although I've made the point before
about porn's essential fugivity it was [manageably and manifestly] less so
prior to this date.
If it's a question of leaving the 70s-90s listings less complete than they
could be, at the expense of chasing predominantly web-based, here today/
gone tomorrow girls with 100 aliases, then I'd chuck the latter in a heartbeat.

"a harmless drudge, that busies himself in tracing the original, and detailing the
signification...."
