clearing the porn records off a laptop!!!

Post by stan crash »

Hello,
I've borrowed a laptop of a friend and had innocently ran some porn on it when I realised that the File menu on the Screen page had been keeping a record.
So far I haven't found a way in to delete them, which I'd like to do for my friend's benefit. The laptop is a Toshiba: Can any body save my bacon?
In distress,
Stan

I am not a a computer techie, but would you mind clarifying your statement:
File menu on the Screen page had been keeping a record
What "file menu", what "screen page", what are you trying to delete/erase?

Hello Len,
When I'm playing a dvd there's a File button that one can bring up by clicking on the 'forwards' of the 'backwards' and 'forwards' dots at the corner top left of the black-bordered media view page. When I press it shows a record of the films I've been watching. I want to know how to erase that record of films.
Very many thanks for answering.
Do you know how to wipe the records of the sites one has visited on the Internet also by any chance?

I am not clear on the first part of your answer. Perhaps forthe benefit of others who may be interested in replying you can indicate what "video player" you are using and whether you can provide a screencap of the media page you are referringto.

As for the second part, if you are using (Microsoft) Internet Explorer, by clicking the "Tools" section, a window opens up that looks like this:

Basically you need to indicate what you wish to delete, in this case quite likely: browsing history, download history, and even list of files you have downloaded, etc so that the next PC user does not see/know what you have been up to. This may not necessarily remove all those files from your PC (there are software applications that accomplish that task on more or less permanent level, but that isnotmy field of expertise) but it's a start. Once you have clicked "delete", you will need to see whether your actions have been successful or not.

I think what you're seeing is a playlist.
I'm no expert but would guess that this info is cached in the program files for
your media-player, somewhere on the drive which holds them [usually in a folder
such as 'downloaded program files'. I have no idea if you can wipe this [but I
assume you can]- in the short term if you play several 'vanilla' titles on the MP
it ought to push the 'suspect' titles toward, and then off, the bottom of the
list.

The info will still be on the laptop- but not readily apparent, and would then
presumably only be findable by a dedicated search.

I got that same impression, but I wanted Stan Crash to confirm it.
Back in the days I used to have "Real Player" on my PC, it used to diplay the the name of recent files it had played. I never was able to figure out how to hide/delete the playlist titles, but I resolved to use the very same gimmick you have outlined. I used to have an innocuous very small (video/audio) file on my desktop and I opened it 3-4 times in succession which would "push down" previous playlist (porn) titles down until the ("offending") titles were no longer visible.
Those were the days when viewing porn material on your PC was problematic as information on how to play, hide and delete was not very easy to come by on the web.

On my DT, for example, if I look at VLC in Program Fiies/Videolan/VLC/http/dialogs,
there's a file called 'playlist'.
Dunno what would happen if you simply deleted it [and I wouldn't recommend
that without advice from a confirmed techie], but it's an option if you're
seriously worried.

Alternatively: if you can, uninstall the MP program and then reinstall it without
restoring any info such as 'favourites' [this will be usually offered as an option
during set-up].

JJ,
Your comments were very helpful, and I?ve solved my problem by finding the file save page and deleted it. The list may be somewhere but at least its not obvious!
A related problem you may be able to help me with. I?m sharing Toshiba laptop and want to make sure I can void my browsing history after use. By hitting the Start button I?ve brought up an Internet Properties box. Under the section titled Browsing history there?s an option marked with a clock face and a reverse arrow over the dial. Next to it it says ?Delete temporary files, history, cookies, saved passwords, and web form information?. There?s a box below it to click in with ?Delete browsing history on exit?.
Will this be enough to delete the record of the sites I?ve visited? Just how full proof is it? As always, thanks for taking the trouble to help.

Hello Len,
Apologies for my totally non-technical phrasing! I've written back to JJ with the following explanation/question. Your thoughts on my Toshiba laptop question would be of value also.
regards and hearty thanks, Stan
