I think it's just a nuance with historical and governmental connotations.

I am not French but I am French speaking (in clear : from an other French speaking place).

All of you are mostly right concerning the meaning of the words.

Mairie is a much newer word and there used to be nuances between Hotel de ville and Mairie. But now they are disappearing and the 2 words mean more and more the same thing: the place where the city is administered.

The nuances between both were these :

Mairie was used for villages. You can not have an Hotel de Ville (a City Hall) in a place that is not a city.

Also, Hotel de Ville means the actual building while Mairie means the administration (if you translate : The administration decided to do that ... you'll say : The mairie decided to do that. You cannot say The Hotel de ville decided to do that.)
!teacher!

One of you wrote that it was probably a play on word. IMHO it is surely a play on word.

The 1st picture is a picture of a City Hall not of an hotel. And it is located in some village somewhere. The STOP sign makes me think of a village near a border (maybe Germany or Switzerland).

But I am not French (in clear : I have the capability of being wrong !oops!)

Interesting.

I had no doubt it was not a hotal, but a City / Village Hall.
So STOP signs are different near the border, comapred to inland.
I thought all STOP signs were the same.

Hotel RM - That's where the action takes place.

Hotel RM sounds like a chain, similar to Travelodge. Or it could simply be a one off Hotel. Ant ideas as to what RM stands for?

Some signs have the word STOP written in it and some others have no words, only a red sign.
What is interesting is that the so-called international sign (with no words) is used mostly near international borders.
It is left to each locality to decide which one they'll use.

The license plate you give an indication.

The number 78 shows that the vehicle is attached to the department of Yvelines.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yvelines

In the best case, the film was shot in this department. Otherwise, in the neighboring departments.
