Crossing the Rubicon

Post by DavidS »

With regard to the European adult film industry, it is clear that at some date around 1975 hardcore suddenly transferred from a basic home movie situation into the cinema. Can anyone advise me when this occured and what film was involved?

It was mostly a matter of legalisation. In West Germany, porn was legalised in January 1975.

At the same time, the authorities clamped down on "normal" sex films in mainstream cinemas, e.g. by constraining their ability to advertise. This happened in both France and Germany at approximately the same time, and my guess is that the authorities were talking to each other.

If you want to nail it down to a film, it probably wasn't a hardcore film at all. It was none other than the original Emmanuelle. The problem was that this film was widely advertised in France, with nude posters etc. and that caused a bit of outrage at the time. Hence the plan to drive sex out of mainstream cinema, and permitting porn in a controlled environment was part of the plan.
