Hillsborough. Now what?

Post by Arginald Valleywater »

So finally a copper admits guilt. What will this achieve? Closure for the fans relatives or the start of a massive compensation claim against the club and the fuzz?

They will accept the apology, accept that the fans were not to blame and move
on.
After all they wanted the truth, it wasn't about compensation.

We did apologise. Hell, Joe Fagan apologised that very night in tears. A number of those responsible for charging the supporters (some not even from the area, with histories of hooliganisn) were convicted.

We have long accepted our part for what happened that night.

A few comments.

ON the subject of compensation, many of the bereaved relatives have already received compensation:

I draw your attention to the following:

"Those who lost loved ones because of the preventable crush at the stadium in Sheffield on April 15, 1989 have been paid an average of ?3,500 each. 16 policeman have received a total of more than ?1.5million. The biggest slice for officers ?mentally scarred by the disaster was an out-of-court ?payment of ?330,000 to former PC Martin Long, who took action against South Yorkshire Police over his post-traumatic stress".

I guess if you had a loved one who went to a football match and didn't come back you would want to know who was responsible. Especially when the person you loved was vilified by the police and aspects of the gutter press as being part of drunken mob that broke down a gate to get access to the ground.

After 26 long, long years of trying, the Hillsborough bereaved finally got the policeman in charge on the day, David Dukinfield to admit that it was his action that caused the fans death by his incompetence and the catastrophic mistake of giving the order to open the gate and that he had lied that the fans had broken down the gate.

Whether this now leaves the way free to make further compensation claims, I don't know. I suspect not, given the amount of time that has lapsed but I may be wrong.

Either way, clearly the motivating factor for the Hillsborough bereaved to keep going all this time is to defend their loved ones from the insults and lies that were heaped on them and their fellow supporters and get the real villains to admit their culpability in this matter.

Good luck to them.
