Well, I seem to have set the ball rolling nicely on this one - thanks all for your
comments. I do apologise to andy-at-handiwork, who seemed to think,
because of my discourteous reference to the BBC producer, that I was being
rude in some way. In fact it was an attempt, often used by authors, to simply
use the kind of language viewpoint that Clarkson probably thinks. Sorry if you
did not pick up on this, andi, I hope others did....

Personally I can see the Beeb`s point of view, even feel sorry for an assaulted
producer. At the same time I see Clarkson must be chuckling since Sky have
made several overtures to sign him and his colleagues up for what will be a
new "Top Gear" in all but name.

I have done many big shoots for porn companies over the years, so can
sympathise with Clarkson in one way only - if you have been on a night shooting
up North (in this case) and returned to your hotel, the restaurant is closed
(this is England), you are in the middle of nowhere and if there is a room
menu the best on offer is likely to be a measly cold club sandwich, then it
would seem the assistant producer should have organised a hot meal ! That's
part of his job, for heavens sakes. Tempers get frayed easily on a tired and
empty stomach. Mr Producer is a little too bolshie and - whack ! Folks, it
could happen on a porn shoot too. Trust me, I have tales I could tell !

I haven't watched Top Gear for over 20 years. I remember him as a presenter and I thought he was a bit of a tool, but that made him entertaining. I don't know what he is like as a person. I heard someone say once that he is one of the highest paid motoring journalists in the world, so he must be doing something right.

If you haven't seen Top Gear for 20 years you can't remember him as a presenter. He only joined the show in 2002.

Since he has reputedly made about ?6million from Top Gear, I'd say that's about right.

He did work on the 'old' Top Gear format, when it was presented by the likes of William Willard, Angela Rippon and Noel Edmunds, focused on things like 'luggage space' and was shit.

They canned that around 2000, Fifth Gear sprung up on C5, which was even shitter, so bad they can only sell it to the History Channel these days.

The BBC brought it back under Clarksons idea (and its rumoured, they needed a Top Gear show to justify the continuing, money spinning sales of Top Gear Magazine) and the rest is history.

It's difficult, because you'll be killing the golden goose by firing Clarkson. The execs at the BBC don't mind, they don't need commercial success, they'll just dip into the tax to fund any losses, and they'd much rather have a show presented by Claire Balding, John Barrowman and Chami Terrorist-Lover watched by six people, than the spectacularly successful un-PC show that exists today.

He was famous in the early-90's. I'm sure it was for being on Top Gear. I think he left then came back.

As I said to Essex Lad, I was sure he was famous back then. I remember him a long long time ago as a TV presenter, as I was sure it was for being on Top Gear.
