Had great energy in his youth and got Liverpool out of a few scrapes which means he's go down as one of their greats. But his game intelligence was awful and his technique average.

Many a time when Liverpool were needing a goal he'd shoot from 30 yards or try a hollywood pass when a simple pass or lay-off would do. He thought the game was about him, hence his 'Stevie Me' tag. He frightened the opposition with his shooting and runs but could never control a game properly like Scholes, Pirlo, Xavi etc.

Gerrard's reputation in the UK highlights the problems we have with our game and why we'll never win a world cup. He's revered for his energy, tackling and screamers, while they overlook his positioning, technique and intelligence. His best years were when he had Alonso behind him doing all the technical clever stuff.

Well he seems to have conned the rest of the football world then as well, given he won UEFA Club Footballer of the Year award (players worldwide can be considered as long as they play for a UEFA club) and the Ballon d'Or Bronze award, apart from umpteen UK awards and EUFA team awards.

Loyal? The same greedy twunt who threatened to leave to get a massive pay rise? Easy to appear great when surrounded by mediocre players. Wouldn't have lasted as long at Man U, Barca or Madrid.
