The ice-bucket challenge...

Post by max_tranmere »

Have you noticed how everyone is doing this now? I can barely think of anyone in the public eye who's not done it. Politicians, popstars, actors, glamour models - just about everyone. This is one craze that has really caught on - more so than just about anything else I've ever heard of. I wonder how you come up with an idea, then push it forward, and get the whole world into it. Clever marketing maybe? It's good though as it apparently raises money for charity.

It's about raising money for motor neurone disease. It was started by a Baseball player in the US who was diagnosed with at the age of 27. It's one disease that there is no cure for and treatment has not improved much since the 1940s. David Niven died of it.

Around 15 US politicians who have recently done this 'challenge' were amongst the Senate members who successfully voted to cut funding to a number of American medical charities including this one.

Many people seem to be doing the low-budget version, namely just getting a vessel of cold water chucked over them - many couldn't run to ice cubes it seems. All the a-list stars and politicians seems to go for the deluxe model, namely the ice cubes, which is how you're supposed to do it. The drill is: you get someone to start filming, then you nominate someone to the camera, then you flinch and wait for the ice-cubes/water to be slung at you. Everyone on the earth seems to be doing it, I just hope as much money as is anticipated DOES get raised for the charity (I think it's for motor-neurone disease).

I'm glad it's caught on, and I hope that each time someone gets drenched that is money raised. At this rate the motor neurone disease charity will get phenomenal amounts of cash. That is a good thing.
