"Britain are not competing in the world cup!"

Britain, the component parts of it anyway, are either participating or were eligible to had they qualified. England is there (or rather was until a few days ago), and Scotland and Wales were potential competitors but weren't good enough to qualify. You're splitting hairs here.

I'm not jealous of Beckham, just annoyed that he feels he's so important that he has to be everywhere - and will continue to be at all major sports tournaments for the rest of his life in one way or another. Would be good if the press tagged him "The Ubiquitous David Beckham". Actually he'd probably like that because just that coverage alone would constitute MORE COVERAGE of him, and that is what he wants.

They would never do that because he wouldn't understand what the word ubiquitous meant.

David Beckham speaks Spanish well enough though and has even given press conferences in Spanish.

Max you stated in your first post that any major sporting event that Britain competes in. True?
England were at the world cup finals ( the major sporting event?)
If you are now suggesting that the world cup qualifiers, which Scotland and Wales also took part in are also major sporting events, Mr Beckham must have been at Hampden at least a couple of times in the last few years? No?

I didn't know he spoke Spanish, even though he was obviously based there for a time. If he does that is quite impressive as he comes over as not the sharpest tool in the box!

Perhaps I could have worded it better, he has to be part of everything that is going on if either England are competing as England or if Britain is there as Britain. He's part of the Olympics as Team GB are participating (he had to be in the "Don't stop me now" video as I said), he has to be part of the World Cup as England are there. So 'Beckham the Englishman' or 'Beckham the Brit' always shows up. He has no direct personal association with the other bits of Britain so won't be part of their specific things.

He was part of the Team GB video as he's English and England is obviously part of Britain. If there were world regional events, like 'Europe versus the Southern Hemisphere' or 'Europe versus North America' in a sports tournament, English competitors are part of the 'Europe' team, and this tournament was absolutely massive and getting vast coverage on TV all over the world for several weeks, then 'Beckham the European' would no doubt be there, either nudging his way into athlete's videos or making TV programmes about it.

Beckham got a huge amount of praise in Spain for learning the language as well as he did. Journalists were greatly impressed by his willingness to answer their questions in their own language.

Really? Despite it saying he answers a question in Spanish it is actually translated into English first:
