On the Waterfront - Muslim free post

Post by David Johnson »

Watched this film again last night for the umpteenth time. Still great after all these years.

Mesmerising performance by Marlon Brando. Brilliant score by Leonard Bernstein. The religious connotation of redemption through suffering, good conquering evil and the role of the church in leading the fight.

All set against a backdrop of the US docks and the struggle of working men to get a decent wage in a corrupt environment.

And the scene in the back of the taxi, when Terry (Marlon Brando) gets a gun pulled on him by his brother who is right hand man for the bad guy, tears me up every time I see it, particularly the way Brando pushes away the gun.

Wonderful. One of the all-time great Hollywood movies.

Did I see 'muslim' mentioned in the title of this thread? Here goes then:

I saw on the BBC London evening news tonight something about the mayor of Tower Hamlets in east London, Lutfur Rahman. Tower Hamlets is a gigantic muslim area, and he has been accused of doing things just to help the local muslim community. He is a muslim, so are most of the residents, but he apparently took exception to the charge. It said on the news that Lutfur Rahman thinks the charge is "racist".

So basically if you think he's being 'a racist', that makes you 'a racist'. Incredible isn't it? I mean what has happened to..... Oh sorry, I misread the title of this thread, it says 'Muslim FREE post'. Right, I get it.

On to the film then, On The Waterfront. I agree, it is certainly a classic. The scene in the back of the taxi is one of the most famous scenes in cinema history. I've not seen it for a while but always look out for it in the TV listings.

It is now seen by some as an apologia by Ella Kazan for his turning in of colleagues and friends to the McCarthy witch-hunts of the late 40's and the betrayal therein.

Brando has to go down as one, if not the most overrated film star ever. Sold far more t-shirts than cinema tickets.

I cannot agree.

Brando did make quite a few films a lot of which had no artistic merit and some of those that were
supposed to have merit were stinkers, 'Last Tango' and 'Missouri Breaks' to
name but two, but he also stared in some brilliant films 'Ugly American',
'Waterfront', 'Streetcar' and the 'Wild Ones'

Vastly overrated actor, NICOLAS CAGE. Watched on TV last night 'Season of the Witch', this was a
serious (?) medieval drama with Cage and Ron Pearlman playing knights returned from the Crusade.
In one scene they are attacked by a pack of wolves, Cage saves Pearlman who says 'thank you', Cage
replies, 'hey, you saved my ass loads of times'. I cannot believe those lines were in the script, they sound
like a NC adlib. Had l not turned off the TV he would have finished up calling Pearlman "dude".
