First it might be useful if people understood how animals get killed before they end up in that lovely cellophane wrapping in Morrisons, Tescos etc. etc.

This will provide me and you with some info which clearly some people in this thread haven't got a clue about e.g. cattle, sheep, calves and pigs are typically stunned and then a process called "sticking" occurs in standard abbatoirs. I will leave you to work out what "sticking" is.

So for Slater it is worth noting the role of STUNNING which may not always work in standard abattoirs. For all, apart from Cockneygeezer, it is worth noting that the RSPCA do not have a problem with the halal process involving a stunning first which Subway insists is a requirement for all their suppliers. So if those ranting on on this forum feel themselves better equipped scientifically than the RSPCA let's hear it.

I draw your attention to the following

?Penetrating captive bolt - used on cattle, sheep and some pigs. A gun fires a metal bolt into the brain of the animal causing the animal to lose consciousness immediately, if done CORRECTLY.

?Electrical - used on sheep, calves and pigs. An electrical current is passed through the animal?s brain via a large pair of tongs, causing temporary loss of consciousness.

Sticking
After stunning the animal is shackled by a hind leg and hoisted above the ground and the slaughterperson sticks the animal. For example with poultry a mechanical neck cutter is used to cut the main arteries and drain the blood.

Secondly on slaughter for religious purposes.



I draw your attention to the following points

In 2012 the Food Standard Agency carried out a survey of abattoirs and the results of that survey show that the percentage of animals for Halal outlets killed WITHOUT pre-stunning was 3% of cattle, 10% of sheep and goats and 4% of poultry.

To be honest I don't give a fuck how they are killed, cook it properly
and just put it between two slices of bread and I'll eat it.
However some religions must give a fuck or there would not be an argument.

Well apparently halal meat is regarded as healthier because more care is taken to drain all the blood from the animal and allegedly it is the blood that is more likely to carry infections etc.

Whether this is true, I have no idea.

I understand that Sikhs cannot eat ritually slaughtered meat. The New Zealand lamb that is not currently labeled as Halal in Tesco's, Asda etc is going to cause problems.

I agree on the comments re. food labelling. The food industry has been getting away with fraud. A recent survey found that a third of the meals from fast food outlets didn't contain entirely the meat it was supposed to.

Without this getting tightened up, the food industry can't even start on identifying how the meat was slaughtered and put it in labelling.
