Baby Boomers

Post by Sam Slater »

Does anyone think the Baby Boomer generation will be considered the luckiest, most selfish generation in decades to come? And are they at the root of all our problems?

They are the generation that avoided fighting in WW2.

They're the generation who could spend their evenings climbing trees after school rather than an hour of homework.

They are the generation that could leave their job at 10am and walk into another by lunch.

They're the generation that didn't have to pay tuition fees and get into debt just to go to University.

They're the generation that spent their youth living through the 60s cultural revolution and the great 70s rock bands.

They're the generation that benefited from cheap housing when 'right to buy' came about through the 80s. Buying up houses the taxpayers paid to build on the cheap and selling for major profit.

They're the generation that have a little more job security in a country who's youth and poor are fighting it out with cheap labour from other countries across the world.

They're the generation of pensioners who get much more help and money than previous generations of pensioners got, and are also allowed to retire much earlier than future generations will.

They're the generation that smoked and drank at their leisure for decades and now costing the NHS billions in healthcare.

They're now the generation that are largely responsible for the rise of UKIP.

They're the generation that has had it easy and, I think, will decide every future election from now.......which means all parties will pander to their every whim and they'll keep having it easy.

Blasphemy to say it, but you knows it's true.

No.

Mainly because baby boomers were born after the Second World War. Bill Clinton is one of the baby boomer generation (born 1946) as is Jack Straw.

Some did but many older people who did fight in the Second World War bought right-to-buy properties. And in any case are they not taxpayers themselves?

Really? When anyone over 50 struggles to find work because employers prefer the cult of youth, I doubt you'd find many baby boomers agreeing with you on that one.

Hang on ? are they in cushy jobs or are they retired? And since governments are increasing the retirement age, how are they retiring earlier?

Yes because young people neither drink, smoke, take drugs nor behave in a reckless fashion. And young people don't gorge themselves stupid on junk food. Must be a different lot that we are constantly told will be the first generation to die before their parents. Still, I suppose if all the fat kids die early, then the NHS will leave a fortune. Time to become an undertaker.

So only people in cushy jobs about to retire or have retired (early) vote Ukip? I think you'll be surprised come 22 May.

This is complete and utter bilge which buys into the government's evil aim to set private sector against public sector workers, employed against unemployed and young against old, while the Tories and the bankers who own the Tory party piss themselves laughing at the gullible who swallow this crap.

Err......I know. Never said otherwise. What's your point?
> They're the generation who could spend their evenings climbing

Baby boomer, give or take a few years, then. Oy.
>

Not blaming them. Just pointing out how easy they've had it through life.
> They're the generation that didn't have to pay tuition fees and
> get into debt just to go to University.
So could anyone born from 1945 to 1979.
Includes the baby boomers then.
>

And that's their fault because?
Again, it's not really about blame. They've had it easy.
> They're the generation that benefited from cheap housing when

Some did but many older people who did fight in the Second World War bought right-to-buy properties. And in any case are they not taxpayers themselves?
Of course they're taxpayers, but the fact is they profited from other taxpayers who didn't/couldn't buy their homes. They sponged off the taxpayers, just like immigrants and chavs are supposed to do now. Spongers who're just a little more respectable.
> They're the generation that have a little more job security in

Really? When anyone over 50 struggles to find work because employers prefer the cult of youth, I doubt you'd find many baby boomers agreeing with you on that one.
Over 50s have much more job security than the younger generations. Of course they do. Why do you think that everytime unemployment rises, it rises faster amongst the young? I didn't say 'easier to find a job when unemployed' I said 'a little more job security'.
>

Hang on ? are they in cushy jobs or are they retired? And since governments are increasing the retirement age, how are they retiring earlier?
Given the baby boomer generation covers anyone born between the mid 40s and upto the mid 60s, they could be anywhere from 55-70 roughly.
>
> They're the generation that smoked and drank at their leisure

Yes because young people neither drink, smoke, take drugs nor behave in a reckless fashion. And young people don't gorge themselves stupid on junk food.
Smoking and drinking are are down from 20-40 years ago. Drastically for smoking. Alcohol consumption is down in the last decade for all age groups apart from the over 50s......where it's up. Pensioners spend more on alcohol per week than the under-30s in the UK (). I suppose if you're not going to bother spending your winter fuel allowance on the heating, you may as well stay warm in the boozer.
And young people don't gorge themselves stupid on junk food.
Bad habits picked up from their parents and baby boomer grandparents.
> They're now the generation that are largely responsible for the

Yeah......it's accepted that most UKIP supporters are over 55. They're least affected by current changes in society but still hark back to the 'good old days' and like to keep it that way. They were 'good old days' for them. They've had it easy.

I knows it is, Essexs Lads.

Over the years I've being getting more and more fed up with this sacred cow so thought I'd give it a little prod. Sacred cows aren't used to being prodded and make a hell of a racket when they are.

But, don't worry, your generation will be looked after well in your retirement because by then 1 in 3 will be over 65 and that age group will have full control of political policies. The class system will be judged purely on your age (which might be an improvement over who your parents were come to think of it). Everyone will be socially mobile! You just need to stay alive as a young slave long enough to see it. !laugh!

It's a stupid point. Like saying everyone on this forum avoided fighting in the Boer War.

You need to buy a calculator. Someone born in the mid-Sixties would be 51 at most.

Yes because all those binge drinkers you see throwing up in town centres on a Friday night are all over 50...

Really? Don't recall seeing too many huge people in the Sixties and Seventies here...
It's a stupid point. Like saying everyone on this forum avoided fighting in the Boer War.
It's not a stupid point unless you thought I was trying to lay blame on them for when they were born. Again, I'm pointing out how easy they've had/having it compared to previous and future generations.
> Over 50s have much more job security than the younger

Cobblers.
What? You deny that raising unemployment doesn't hit the young harder? I think the stats are on my side here, Esses Lad. Like it or lump it, I'm right.
You need to buy a calculator. Someone born in the mid-Sixties would be 51 at most.
I think I said 'give or take a few years'. It doesn't matter. 'baby boomer' is just an easy, well known phrase. If you want to argue over 3 or 4 years here and there then that's fine.....just realise it's pedantry to my point. If it bothers you so much, whenever I say 'baby boomer' take it to mean anyone between 50 and 75. It's not the important point and just semantics.
Yes because all those binge drinkers you see throwing up in town centres on a Friday night are all over 50...
That says more about the drinking habits of the young, and where they drink, not how much they actually consume. Stats show that over 50s drink more than the under 30s. Don't shoot the messenger. Thems the facts you knows.
> Yeah......it's accepted that most UKIP supporters are over 55.

Most of the broadsheet press.......yougov......every poll that's been done on it. From: : "Demographically, UKIP voters attract men slightly more than women ? and the party draws its support disproportionately from older people with fewer qualifications. Whereas 46% of all voters are over 50, and 38% under 40, the figures for UKIP are 71% and 15% respectively." I'd say 71% of your voters being over 50 means it's a party propped up by baby boomers.
And who will be paying for this land of milk and honey?
The slave workforce of anyone under 50 who'll pay much more in and work longer.

Again......none of it is the fault of the baby boomers. They just fell lucky, that's all. I'm just pointing that out.

Third rate bilge, Sam

Post by David Johnson »

First the obvious point to make which underpins this list.

You define baby boomers as those who were born between mid-1940's and the mid-60s. This makes baby boomers at the current time to be between about 70 and 50. So this covers the entire post-war period. What your list then does is cherry pick the best bits ignoring the bad bits and applying them to one generation when you could equally well apply them to a number of generations.

But hey it supports your view so why use intelligence?

"They are the generation that avoided fighting in WW2."

Given that to have fought in WW2 you would have had to have been about 87 years old now, this applies to almost the entire population so you could just have easily picked any post-war generation.

" They're the generation who could spend their evenings climbing trees after school rather than an hour of homework."

Homework was given to kids in the 60s and 70s. This is a completely false assertion that you make.

"They are the generation that could leave their job at 10am and walk into another by lunch."

This is completely misleading. All baby boomers would have been at an age when they would have been potentially hit by the recession during Thatcher's time. Unemployment rose above 3 million so I could just as easily argue that they had it worse than subsequent generations because the unemployment figures have not reached 3 million. And obviously, baby boomers have not only had to put up with the Thatcher recession and the Major recession, but the vast majority of them would have been on the receiving end of the recession that started in 2007/8.

"They're the generation that didn't have to pay tuition fees and get into debt just to go to University."

You have maybe noticed that the UK does not only consist of England. For example, Scottish students studying in Scotland do not pay tuition fees. In Wales Welsh students can apply for maintenance grants instead of student loans. The current government estimate is that 45% of student loans will be written off as a result of non-payment.

It is also worth pointing out that in the 1960's only about 5% of people went on to higher education. Now it is over 40% so I could easily argue that the post baby boomer generations have much greater opportunities for higher education than the baby boomers.

"They're the generation that spent their youth living through the 60s cultural revolution and the great 70s rock bands."

Have you listened to some of those "great 70s rock bands". Jeez.

" They're the generation that benefited from cheap housing when 'right to buy' came about through the 80s. Buying up houses the taxpayers paid to build on the cheap and selling for major profit."

Again to point out the obvious, the right to buy scheme still exists and Cameron has increased the discount to ?75K for 2 million social housing tenants to buy their houses.

"They're the generation that have a little more job security in a country who's youth and poor are fighting it out with cheap labour from other countries across the world".

There is plenty of ageism around. Hey look at you, Slater! And people in their 50s are first to go when there is an option to get someone much younger who is desperate for work and prepared to accept lower wages.

"They're the generation of pensioners who get much more help and money than previous generations of pensioners got, and are also allowed to retire much earlier than future generations will."

The first part of this is incorrect. In 1980 Social Security Act the link between state pension increases and average earnings broken by Margaret Thatcher's Conservative government. If the link with earnings had not been broken, a basic state pension for a single pensioner would worth about ?30 a week more. So I could just as easily argue that the generation before the baby boomers were better off pension-wise because it was linked to average earnings.

The second part of your statement is daft. The government has currently provided an indication up to the age of 68. The age at which women can retire goes up to 65 in 2018. This will effect the majority of the baby boomer generation. There is no commitment to pension ages after 68.

"They're the generation that smoked and drank at their leisure for decades and now costing the NHS billions in healthcare."

Ah yes, heroin, ecstasy, cocaine, such problem free drugs. And as for the obesity epidemic, it is all the fault of their apparently slimmer parents.

I'm bored with this now. The obvious conclusion is that you never did any of the homework that was set for you at school and college and spent all your time climbing trees.

But keep your posts coming, they are truly hilarious!
