Gordon Brown is regularly criticised for selling off gold at rock bottom prices but as an old (left wing) history teacher keeps telling me, "So what? We're not on the gold standard any more."

Not Gordon's finest moment. He sold off the gold to put the money into interest bearing bonds. He wasn't alone at that time. The financially conservative Swiss also sold off a lot of gold at a similar time.

That being said, Brown still blew ?9 billion.

Secondly, things are much, much better in the energy business since Thatcher privatised the energy business that you and I once owned, aren't they?
