I know you wouldn't see it. To put it as simply as possible there are two basic ways of maximising profits - cutting costs/raising prices. Privatised companies do both in spades.

You appear to inhabit a world where privatisation inevitably brings effective competition from which the customer benefits. It doesn't work in the utility sector does it, where prices are much of a muchness? Nor does it work in many, many parts of the retail sector where the prices of food from the supermarket go up in unison and prices of white goods are very, very similar.

Prices in the Royal Mail will go up in line with price rises everywhere else in the sector as part of the relentless drive to maximise profits in privately owned companies.

And finally your obsession with the concept that only the private sector can provide investment in business. This is nonsense......obviously. Zorro, you have just had your pocket picked by the coalition government...cop on!!

So JPMorgan told the Government earlier this year that it believed Royal Mail could be worth up to ?10bn, including its debts, ahead of the postal operator's privatisation.

I've dragged this old thread up because of the notice now on the post box nearest to where I work. This box is in a city housing estate not some rural outpost.

' To improve efficiency ( my highlight ) from 15th September the last collection from this box will be no earlier that 09:00 Monday - Friday and 07:00 Saturday. '

The current weekday time is 16:00, I can't recall the Saturday time but guess around 11:00.

I am presuming the plan is for the collections to be at the same time as the delivery.

Other services keep having ever later cut-off times, look how late you can now order from say eBuyer or Next for delivery the following day.

This it what I call efficiency improvements, not having to post much earlier or trek to a Post Office .....
