I can't understand some of the comments here... incredibly old fashioned ideas being touted. The world has moved on from when you got a peerage for simply stealing someone else's lands, and quite rightly so!

Yes, great scientists of the past were equally worthy of such an honour, but the system didn't work like that then... thankfully it does now. If we are to continue with an unelected second chamber, then at least fill it with as wide a range of people who have a certain knowledge or expertise in various areas of life. I don't have a problem with eminent academics, lawyers, scientists, businessmen and industrialists getting peerages along with people who have campaigned for other people's rights (be they trade unionists, social campaigners etc) as it all adds to the richness and diversity of the second chamber.

Better that than the current House of Commons which is ever more inhabited by career politicians or the old House of Lords which was predominantly land owners.

Good for Doreen Lawrence.

Ever a welcome voice of reason, humanity and decency, Bob. Couldn't agree with you more. If anyone might have gripes about Doreen in the Upper House, it will probably be the Labour party hierarchy themselves who will find she is very much her own woman and not necessarily ready to be bound by the party whip if she disagrees with it.

Whereas the new House of Lords appears to be filled with kindly donators to the respective political parties or ex MPs with the occasional PR appointment.

'....Stefan Kiszko's mother should have got a peerage. And what about Iris Bentley? Surely should have been Dame Iris?...'

That is a ludicrous false-equivalence.

There must be a whole load of people who have had a relative murdered, if they all got a peerage you would need a house of lords the size of fucking Wembley!!. It's because she is black, no other reason.

By the way, now she is a "lady" that must make her middle class at the very least!!. You don't like them very much, do you?

This is what Doreen Lawrence has been about

Maybe Iris Bentley did just as much but I didn't read about it?

Perhaps not.

I think it's complete bollocks, she isn't deserving of it, although I agree with the point Bob made about representation.

That said to those being a bit silly / racist tw*ts (as I think David and others would call / wants to call them) Doreen is Labour's answer to Call me Dave's Helen Newlove.

That, in itself, probably says as much about the current Labour Party than anything but also sums up Opportunity Dave and the state of our Politics....
