The media were already for the obligatory evil anti islamic raist attack story and then had to backtrack.

In both crime and law, hate crimes (also known as bias-motivated crimes, or race hate) occur when a perpetrator targets a victim because of his or her perceived membership in a certain social group. Examples of such groups include but are not limited to: racial group, religion, sexual orientation, ethnicity or gender identity

How do you know that?

As far as I recall all the media reports were on the lines of 4 people stabbed including a police officer - 1 man arrested etc. etc - motive unclear.

Just pointing out that "hate crime" has a specific meaning in law which I have described so as far as we appear to know "hate crime" was not a correct description.

Nor would it be used when a white, male, CofE, heterosexual boozer hammered another similar down the Dog and Duck at last orders. Love it ain't but according to the law it isn't a "hate crime".
