I'm a bit late here but it's been said above that..

"I say Falklands, you'd probably come back with, there's oil there. Well no one knew that until the late 90's. It was a defence of a British overseas territory. Simple as that. Now there is oil, what a bonus."

That statement is 100% not true.

I remember the issue of "the very high probability of large oil reserves in the South Atlantic" was part of the debate in 1982 regarding whether the UK should re-take the Falklands.

Strange. You start a thread asking a fairly reasonable question, though not many have actually answered your question.

But then you insert a post, basically rejoicing in the deaths of soldiers. Nothing to do with your initial post.

So ask you, what would your 'friend's' Father have thought about the quality of his son's friends? I wonder did you ever make your thoughts known to him about the deaths of his friends? Or, like your country as a whole, were you too cowardly?

Seeing as you gave up on the actual thread about the Falklands, it's odd that you cherrypick a comment from a thread about 'are British Soldiers spoilt'. Show the OP the decency of at least answering his question first.

Anyway, to answer your question;

How exactly is my statement 100% not true?

Prior to 1998, it was only suspected by geologists etc, that there could be oil and gas in that area, it was not known.
In 1998 it was finally discovered but deemed not to be economically viable to drill for.



In 2007, Argentina withdrew from a deal, which allowed it to explore for oil around the F.I.s.
Worst decision they ever made, since invading in 1982. As, in 2010, huge oil supplies were found and more have been found since.

How's your job hunting going Spider? You should join the Armed forces, as according to some on here, they're spoilt.
Or, you could get on a boat, or plane and nip down to the Falklands. No unemployment there.

Bet there's a booming high street in the Falklands, they had a woman running the local Falklands gift shop as talking head on the news during bathe referendum and the surprise was that she didn't want the troops to leave.

Considering the amount of government subsisdy she is getting for her business roughly ?77 million per year in defence costs everyone should move to the Falklands and start a business based on providing mars bars and wank mags to military personel.l

Von Boy makes a very good point. Based as he is apparently in Switzerland, I have asked him if the Swiss Guard could "toughen up" the namby pamby British soldiers based on their endless campaign record in the toughest of campaigns in the world.
