I think, without wishing to be pedantic, that you mean the worst British
civilian disater of World War II. I have no doubt that other citizens in
other countries (eg the Russian civilians in Leningrad and Stalingrad to
name just two) suffered far more.
The Bethnel Green incident was nonetheless a tragedy. War morale made it
necessary to hush it up.

I agree. My wife lost 80 members of her own family during WW2 and they all lived and died in Leningrad from various causes.
