Pistorius is the second most high profile athlete on the planet after Bolt. Another Nike superstar has blotted his golden copybook....Tiger, Lance, Blade Runner....who next??

If someone doesn't deserve widespread news coverage because they aren't household names then how would anyone become a household name to start with?

It's like saying Fred West didn't deserve the news coverage he got because he was unknown outside his own fucking street and circle of friends/family.

Stop talking out of your arse.

I get the impression they really throw the book at you in South Africa. He'll be breaking rocks even when he's 90.

I watched Channel 4 news a couple of night ago and there was a live link up with a correspondent in South Africa. This woman pointed out how there was a gang rape in the western Cape that got little coverage and also there was a boss of a large corporation in the country who beheaded his wife and that got little coverage too. Everything has been about this athlete guy. The media are deciding to go with this on a massive scale and other news-worthy stories have been batted into the long grass.

A total nobody who commits a terrible crime, Fred West to mention your example, would normally get big news coverage because what they've done is so evil and significant. Other stories from South Africa, which involved hideous acts, aren't getting that sort of coverage (even though they ought to) and instead it is all about the bladerunner. This thing with him killing his wife is world news and every minuti bit of it is a top story. It is disproportionate considering the size of star he is/was, and the fact other ordinarily massive stories are not being covered to the extent they should be proves the media are choosing to go with this above all others.

Because he's not well known enough to warrant this kind of coverage. I was out earlier tonight and many people in my local pub were talking about this. They would have had little interest in him as an athlete if this story hadn't emerged and he was instead on the pub TV competing in an event. Had it have been someone very well known for what they did as a star, sufficient for the pub to be talking about that sporting endeavour he had just achieved, then it would make sense for everyone to be going on about him now that some infamous event had occured in his life. The coverage he is getting for this infamous event, and how much it's being talked about, is disproportionate to how well known he was before.

Everyone knows who Bolt is, he really became a household name. People who aren't even interested in athletics were texting me back in the summer to say the 100 metres or the 200 metres was about to start on BBC1, and I felt obliged to tell other people about it. These were world events involving a huge star. He really did become a household name worldwide. Now, if Usain Bolt had done something as bad as is alledged to have been done by this South African disabled athlete, then it would not be disproportionate to give it mega coverage on all news programmes and on the front pages of all newspapers.
