RIP Michael Winner....
Just heard that he has died aged 77. Regardless of what you might think of his films, his work for the Police Benevolent Fund is something he should always be praised for. RIP.
Just been listening to Robert Elms on BBC London , who said he was a Real Gent and did not give a fig what others thought .
Does 'not giving a fig what people think' make you a 'real gent' these days? Hardly the traditional, British, view on what it is to be a gentleman, which was about courtesy, chivalry and all-round politeness.
I'm sure Michael Winner was a decent bloke. He always came across quite affable and witty (daft adverts aside). I wouldn't argue with him being described as a 'real gent'.......just not for the 'I don't give a fuck what you think' and 'take me as I am' attitude you talk of.
RIP Michael Winner.

Re: ..( OFF TOPIC)
It's funny how someone can become a 'restaurant critic' just because they are a celebrity. Michael Winner was one and so was Ken Livingstone. What credentials did either have, other than that they were well known? Many people would like to do that for a job, no early mornings and being paid to eat meals in posh places. I think Michael Winner was more of a 'celebrity' in later years, many didn't even really know he was originally a film director, he was a ubiquitous person on TV - and his film career was something from his past that was rarely mentioned in later times. He was a good bloke though, giving money to pay for memorials to fallen Police officers and doing lots of work for the Police Benevolent Fund.

At least he was a "celebrity" for actually doing something other than appearing on Big Brother or on the "X" Factor.
