Where do travelers register their cars?

This question was asked on a local radio station to the chief constable of that county... somewhere around the M25 area... Guess what... he didn't know the answer and left the caller almost feeling as if he was "picking" on travelers!!! back of the net... great reverse spin..

But does anyone know the answer... where would the speeding fine be sent... etc...???

You know, I've been making tentative enquiries and looking into a life on the road, but it seems impossible to achieve legally.

My plan, (which will probably not happen) is when the time comes to retire, sell up, buy one of those huge winnebago things and spend my last days touring the country and Europe. But the very first thing seems to be it's impossible to get insurance for 'all year living' so that seems to kill it off straight away. Most everything else requires an address, again making it impossible to be truly independent on the road.

I don't know how the travellers and gypsies, (who seem to be fond of buying land and building permanent homes whilst claiming to be always on the move) get round it, but i'm finding it hard to discover the 'right' way to do things.

All the so called travellers I have ever known don't register anything and they don't exist. Funny how the authorities miss it all (NOT) !

A copper once told me that if they stop a gypo on the road and get their details, i.e. Joe Bloggs, top meadow, 5 acre field, Browns Farm, whereever. When a summons is issued it can,t be delivered because the " Name and address" are spurious. Therefore they can't be prosecuted. I did remark that perhaps they should be arrested and dealt with by a summarily convened Magistrates Court and "Weighed off" immediately.
Any ticket issued at the roadside is just chucked away when the cops have gone.
Nothing gets up my nose more than seeing these bastards get away with what they are. I have always made a point of taxing and insuring my cars. I work, I pay my dues and I can't see why others shouldn't do the same. If they don't then the Gendarmes should jump all over them. Then they might, just might regain some of the respect I had for them a few years ago. The present bunch seem too want to do what they want to do and not what Parliament and the public want them to do. Getting out of their cars and on their feet may well earn them some respect and reduce local crimes. Another thing, why do they have to have BMW's and Mercs and Volvos? There are plenty of large Fords and Vauxhalls that could dop the job.

I see the above posts are just what I expected... I really don't think the powers to be have a clue what to do and also they don't want to rock the boat.. must not be rasist

Its like the chief constable was doing... diverting the question/answer to suit himself... its sad when the police can't even be arsed to do their job!!

Could you be a tad more precise?

There is no law as far as I know which says that you cannot:

1. Give a Royal Mail provided po box number.

2. Give a mate's address where you might spend time there if you are travelling here there or everywhere.

3. Give the address of a caravan plot you own.

If there is, please back up your argument.

David Johnson is right. A friend of mine does insurance for gypsies and they always have a fixed address somewhere, a friend, an older relative who is fixed on a site etc. They are no different to other customers really except that they always pay with cash and always offer him a bacon sandwich. Put it this way, if you were a gipsy would you give the police the easiest way to stop you when moving around? Their cars would not last long on the road without tax and insurance. Besides some of them drive around in cars too expensive to lose, so insurance is a must. My friend says they pay a pretty high premium (big mark up for him) as a lot of the popular insurance places won't touch them. He also did insurance recently for someone who lives on a barge who was using a friend's address, so same kind of thing. He told me that one caravan site alone had been used as an address for about 100 cars.
