Er DJ I am English. You may not realise that many of Savile Row, Bond Street and other high end shopping districts absolutely love African presidents and other ministers for their amazing spending power. Mr Mugabe is a prime example of living in luxury even Tony Blair would find excessive yet pleads for global aid while his people starve. A couple of years back a Black American Ivy League Prof reported we should stop sending our money to Africa as most of it never sees the continent and is immediately stashed abroad. She quoted a figure of $1 trillion since the 1950s and people are still starving and hacking eachother to death over ancient tribal differences.
We should empower them to take control of their lives but opening a chequebook will not weave magic...now I'm off to watch Zulu for the 22nd time.

Now lads,...

Post by David Johnson »

I do get the impression that very few of the lads on this forum have actually lived, worked and paid taxes overseas for any length of time.

Comparing tax levels between countries is extraordinarily difficult for reasons I really can't be arsed to go into here but a lot of it is to do with how health and social security gets paid for, for example.

Please note as far as knowledge of "over there" counts (miss this bit if you like, I am being sarcastic - a terrible weakness I know):

1. Catching crabs off a Norfolk pier does not count
2. Nor does a day trip to Calais to buy the Xmas booze complement.
3. Nor does a week's holiday all inclusive in the Costa Blanca.
4. Nor does knowing a fella who knows a fella who went to Riga for his stag do.

Ok?

I have had the joy, privilege and excitement of living, working and paying taxes in countries such as Sweden, Denmark, Netherlands etc for lengthy periods as well as obviously the good old UK.

Now I cannot say as I took my required barrowload of cash to buy one of Denmark's finest beers or considered remortgaging prior to buying a bottle of wine in Sweden, that I was gobstruck by how much better off I was, working in Copenhagen or indeed, Amsterdam or Stockholm, compared to Britain.

ANd finally given the source of the data used for this story, can I suggest a weekly prayer meeting where like-minded forumites can form a ring and hold hands and find resolution? In terms of a location, Max can provide a link to the East London mosque if need be.

So many bijou churches have changed into accommodation haven't they?

Don't bother to include me, ta!

!wink!

Argie - Scottish illegal

"Er DJ I am English."

No you are not. You are half Scottish which you have admitted on this forum as a result of having a Scottish mother. And you are a public sector worker which makes it even worse.

I, on the other hand, am Aryan English going back generations.

Would Hitler have called someone like yourself who was the product of a German father and a Jewish mother, a German? No, he would not.

Likewise someone who is the product of English and Scottish parents is not English but a genetic mutation of Englishness.
