Calling someone a bastard is name-calling, not a figure of speech. Have I ever called a person a name to their face? Of course I have, but I've always been aware that I was in the wrong to do so, and that's because when I was young and did it, either my parents or teachers would have picked me up on it.
Is trying to treat others with dignity and respect by consciously trying not to resort to name-calling being sanctimonious and holier-than-thou? Great, I'll take that all day.
And if you think I'm being extremely snide, snotty and patronising towards you, then tough. Start to grow-up and treat others with dignity and respect then maybe people won't be so patronising or condescending towards you.
Now the FA is "institutionally racist"?!

So not a saint after all then. Despite all the self-righteous posturing.

No - they're two different things.
Treating people with dignity and respect is what it says on the tin.
On the other hand, patrolling internet forums and trying to "educate" people (who you don't know from Adam) on how to speak & behave and telling them to "grow up" is being snotty, sanctimonious and holier-than-thou.

You're making the mistake of thinking that I attach any importance whatsoever to what an anonymous Internet entity called "a m playlist" may or may not think about me on the basis of some forum postings.
I will however happily call bullshit when I see it - and you my friend appear to be full of it.
In any case you're boring me now so I'll say cheerio.

No, I'm no saint, but I don't mind a bit of self-righteous posturing and looking to educate others on how to speak and behave when it appears that those others don't appear to have been taught good manners. If you think me telling you to grow up is being snotty, sanctimonious and holier-than-thou, then tough.

Oh, I'm sure you don't attach any importance to what I may or may not think of you. But remember this lesson, Flat_Eric: treat people with dignity and respect, then chances are people won't be so patronising or condescending towards you. Now what is that I smell? Are yes, the distinct smell of bull you know what. But where is it emanating from? From you, Flat_Eric, or somewhere else?

Some of these insults are firmly rooted in racist abuse, in particular big nose (Jewish), ginger hair (Irish).

Well, when I want to abuse someone (verbally) then I want to abuse THEM and therefore precisely WHO THEY ARE. That is what personal insult is all about. I know there is a Christian tradition of Born Innocence, Acquired Guilt and Redemption etc. in the Western World, where we are all born good and equal etc. Behind it is the idea of the separation of body and soul. Thus to insult properly you are supposed to insult their soul (what they have become), not their body (what they are), because you are born with your skin colour etc. and all your nasty habits come in later out of deploying free will. As a non-Christian I do not buy into that distinction, and I do not buy into being born good either. IMO physical characteristics are not fundamentally different from behavioural characteristics.
BTW I would not label myself white over any other physical characteristic, simply because I live in a city with a white majority - in other words, the 'white' physical characteristic is in that context not very distinctive, even less distinctive than being 'male'.
