Not true mate. Most areas of England have CBL, or choice based letting. You register and bid like an estate agent. Your application is banded and you also have to declare savings etc. If you are wealthy you go to the bottom of the list. What might change is a new class of property being built to be let to "inbetweeners" that is working people who are nowhere near a mortgage deposit. Not in my county mate!! A criminal record can exclude you from every provider in a county if the offence is serious enough, as does previous high arrears. The real issue is, as my MD said last week, is we need two housing policies. One for the M25 area and another for the rest of the UK. London and its surrounding towns are so far off the scale compared to say Lincolnshire or Northumberland.

Im all for a housing shakeup as currently the least deserving you are the more likely you will get council housing. Although the idea of serviceman being shoved to the top smacks of jingoistic crap to me, why do they deserve this honour and this voluntary work option how's that going to work? How long have you been volunteering? How many hours! What about those who volunteer because they are working?

Bit baffled for the ex servicemen? After several years as a squaddie you should have a tidy sum saved for a deposit...the armed forces get decent salaries and you aren't going to spend much on a submarine or on active service are you?

So, according to you servicemen don't have anything much to spend their pay on. Well, service personell are not well paid for what they have to do.
They are not on a 40 hour week like blue collar workers, or 37 as engineering staff. They are on call 24/7 and when they do go on Ops they are in harms way. I know, I've had my share as many many others have before me and since.
My son, a sergeant with 19 years service earns 25k pa. Not a lot, especially when you break it down. He has a wife and family, his choice before you jump in and say he didn't have to. If every one didn't partner up and marry etc there'd be no human race.
Whilst skulking below the waves (subbies skulk, they do not advertise their presence) or sweating their bollocks off in some far flung shithole they still have to spend some of their pay to support their families. Some service personell do buy their own homes, so they aren't all on a housing waiting list. My son is buying a house near where he is posted at present as his wife is a nurse at a nearby hospital.
I see nothing wrong with service personell applying to their local council of the area that they are from. Don't they have the same rights as others of their areas?
Service personell pay NI, PAYE, council tax and VAT on most things they buy. So, they pay their way in society, as much as some would like to think otherwise.
