Soul Sister

Post by andy at handiwork »

'er indoors and I went to see this in preview last night at the Savoy Theatre. Talk about a crowd-pleaser. A barnstorming and star-making performance from Emi Wokoma as Tina and a creditable one from Chris Tummings as Ike. The drama bits are a bit perfunctory, expositional and clunky in places, but the show has a vibrancy and verve that is highly enjoyable. A lot of the non musical action takes place with actors interacting with back projected video and there are some striking scene changes done very ingeniously. I've never been a particular fan of TT, I'm more a fan of Ike (musically not as a person) myself but I was singing along with the rest of them as the show runs through the back-catalogue and more, though not Nutbush City Limits sadly. There is fantastic support from a good tight band and fabulous vocal backing and dancing from four rather lovely Ike-ettes. Despite a tendency to verge on 'the best Tina Turner tribute act around', Emi's portrayal has Tina down to a tee, including the strange walk that looks like a man who has left a urinal too soon. Had a look round to see if there was anyone famous; Floella Benjamin was in the row behind us. If you are in Town and fancy a thoroughly enjoyable show in an architecturally fabulous venue, get down to the Savoy.

I'm not a fan of musicals, but ever since I saw a brief clip of the two main characters (possibly on The One Show whilst channel hopping on night) I knew it was something I wanted to go and see. Thanks for the review.

Wow Andy, theres more to you than meets the eye. Theres me thinking you have lost interest in movies and you come back with this, like a left hook out of the mist.

More impressed that you enjoyed it enough to tell us about it
